BPL internet phone trial
------------------------
Broadband over Powerlines technology is now being trialled in Australia to
support VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) internet telephone capability.

Power utility Country Energy and Australian broadband phone company engin
are claiming to have achieved Australia's first use of VoIP over powerlines.

This is part of a broader BPL trial being conducted at Queanbeyan in New
South Wales.

Country Energy earlier tested broadband internet capability and is now
primarily trialling online household smart meters, remote reading and power
network management.

In the VoIP experiment it combined the engin 'Voice Box' adaptor product
connected to an analogue phone and a Mitsubishi BPL modem, telephone calls
were via the mains wiring of a building.

That trial demonstrated it was possible to make telephone calls to both to
landline and mobiles phones.

Country Energy's Manager Telecommunications Enterprises, Geoff Fietz, said
in a statement that the VoIP trial demonstrates the maturing of BPL and the
potential of the technology.

Mr Fietz said BPL technology has the potential to provide affordable
broadband access to rural and regional Australia.

It further demonstrates, according to Country Energy, the enormous
potential of the technology - every powerpoint becomes a broadband delivery
point.
