My favourite is "The Alternative Dictionary" where you can learn to swear
in many languages from Afrikaans to Zulu. With an impending visit to the
French side of my family, I'm brushing up on my French slang.
The French have a different scale of what is or isn't considered sociallly
acceptable. As an exclamation, "merde" seems to be used in polite circles
to a much greater extent than its English equivalent.
A neat little French slang word I've enearthed is is "Malpt", which is an
abreviation of "merde a la puisannce treize!" "Merde to the thirteenth
power".
There's a wonderfully funny book just been published written in French by
an Englishman, but now translated into English. It's called "A Year in the
Merde" and relates his experineces of the French while spending a year
working in France.
Suffice to say that had the title been totally written in English the
book wouldn't have found its way into the shops - maybe not even off
the printing press. If I wrote the word on here in English, I doubt it
would get through the filters either.
I don't know if it's just an "urban legend" but I'm told that the reason
Toyota don't sell very many "MR2" cars in France, (they seem to sell well
in the UK - mostly driven by "girl racers" or "ladettes"), is that if MR2
is pronouunced in French it sounds near enough to "merde" (em err deux),
and even closer to "merdeux" ("crappy"). Who'd want to by a posers' car
with a name-tag like that?
