I bought a brand new Churchill crown to keep when it came out. Fat chance of
that. When we married, Joan asked me for it as "Somethuing old, something NEW,
something borrowed, and something blue". I bought another two crowns over the
years, as well as a complete set of decimal coinage when they came out in the
blue wallet (1970's was it?). Sadly a burglar invaded our home and stole many
of what are now just "treasured memories". What he did not steal, he
destroyed. it is imprinted in my meory forever that amogst other degradations,
he got out all of our wedding photographs, put them on the bed, went
downstairs and fetched a bottle of walnut teak oil (He had to do this
deliberately as the bottle was downstairs and the bed and photographs etc.
were upstairs) and poured the teak oil over the entire collection on the bed,
ruining them forever. We now have only friend's pictures which they later gave
to us.
I do not believe that this was a personal attack, (A disgruntled ex of Joan's
or mine for instance, as none would have acted in such a fashion at all,
although it is possible of course) as many burglars do similar to their
victims. Many have a terrible M.O (Modus Operandi, "Method of operating",
which helps to catch them in repeat cases). Some smear faeces all over the
place and worse. I suspect that it was someone who had had a bad experience
either with parent family life, or with his own marriage, and was taking his
spleen out on an innocent victim. Sad really as it served no purpose. I hope
that he has sorted his life out. It was during this same burglary that my
(Deceased) grandfather's presentation watch was stolen and anonymously posted
through our letterbox some 10 years later, complete with new hands! Remorse?
Or perhaps a mother's discovery of her son's illegal possessions and attempt
to put things right? Who knows. The name was on the watch so a trace was not
impossible.
