Hi Bob and readers,
I agree totally that bad language on Amateur Radio as a whole is rare.
Even here in the tolerant US where some seem to think that anything goes,
I can assure all of you that it doesn't! Sure, every once in a while I
hear a mild one or somebody may slip and immediately catch himself, but
common practice (unlike CB) it's not. At least for the most part Amateurs
everywhere are a decent and friendly lot.
Admittedly there was a time here when 80M had decended into the sewer and
2M had nearly done the same. Then on 2 there was a very severe problem
with unlicensed individuals in the northern NJ/NY metro area who painted
the airwaves blue with threats and the worst language imaginable. They
went so far as to use thier modified rigs to interfere with police and
fire radio so ended up in a war against an army of cops who BTW are also
Amateurs. Around that time the FCC got itself together and between
everyone from policemen to federal marshalls came down on them with the
hammer from H. Along with the foul mouths on 80M, the lot got anything
from a warning to jail time depending on the particular offense.
Now that things have been back to normal for the last several years we
continue as always to be decent people and police our own ranks when
someone steps out of line. Very rarely these days does the FCC step in
especially since we must avoid such severe action since it raises a "let
the chips fall where they may" situation.
As for this "international warfare" the whole thing is silly. All I see
in these instances is a whole load of rubbish coming from a very few
uninformed/misinformed/ignorant individuals. It's these very same ones
who refuse to listen to reason and continue to spout rubbish, so maybe we
should just let them be? Let them wallow in thier self imposed ignorance
while the rest of us listen and learn. BTW, just how often does someone
write saying "Thanks, I never knew that."? Unfortunately they just keep
silent rather than joining into reasonable discussion which leaves the
door open to a flood of BS.
So Bob, it's nice to know that VK Hams by and large are a very decent lot
so thanks, I never knew that. (;->)
