Hi All and thanks for reading.
It seems the local ATV gurus are going to upgrade our local analogue ATV
repeater to digital.
Nothing wrong with that you say, well that's OK by me as well, but I'm
told they are upgrading to some obscure digital mode which is purely used
for long distance high noise circuits. well that's fair enough too I
suppose considering the very low power levels permitted in VK.
However.
In VK3 there is a pretty large audience of prospective amateurs and SWL's
whom currently watch the analogue transmissions and through that become
interested in ham radio. By chopping the analogue and going to the
proposed DATV mode this large potential source of amateur operators is
being disenfranchised.
Like I guess many of the older amateurs, I first became interested in AR
by listening to short wave broadcasts and stumbling across the HF ham
bands.
With the analogue system any person with a reasonable antenna and a stock
standard television receiver could receive the transmissions.
With the proposed DATV system, no member of the general public will be
able to watch and be fascinated by ATV, not even aware any more that there
is such a thing as a ham radio operator. All that is left is that Hancock
skit on "it are raining in Tokyo"
It seems to me that it is pretty stupid to ignore this large audience of
potential amateurs merely to be technically up market.
What is happening in other countries, are the DATV transmissions being
broadcast in the "national standard" mode or are they being broadcast in
technical snob mode. If it's not standard we may be doing the future
amateur service a big disfavour.
