Update for 9:15 p.m. EDT, Sept. 24:
A massive solar event that is said to be the second most powerful during
this current cycle is still sending an increasing amount of charged
particles toward Earth, prompting NASA officials to delay the Athena 1
launch from Kodiak Island in Alaska until Thursday at the earliest.
"And we're going to need to be lucky to make it Thursday," NASA spokesman
George Diller said late Monday.
The rocket's guidance system is sensitive to this proton flux. In fact,
Diller said, the stream of energy coming from the sun is so great it
would have prevented any Delta or Atlas rockets from launching from Cape
Canaveral.
The delay in the NASA launch leaves the Ariane 4 alone on the schedule
for Tuesday as it is the next launch to orbit.
Arianespace managers have been watching the solar activity but as of late
tonight the launch still is on schedule for Tuesday. The next update on
this launch from South America is expected in the morning.
