RISC OS 3.5 to 3.6 UPGRADE

Lots of people are upgrading to the new StrongARM processor board, and
this necessitates an upgrade of RISC OS to version 3.7. There are quite
a few people like myself, who have v3.5 in their earlier Risc PCs, so
since anyone upgrading from v3.6 to 3.7 will have a nice set of 3.6 ROMs
going spare, this is a golden opportunity to grab them!

Version 3.6 is worth having, mainly because it has the new filecore and
can therefore format IDE hard drives to larger than 512Mb without
partitioning. However, there are also other minor benefits such as some
applications being in ROM rather than on disc, eg Paint and Edit.

Upgrading from 3.5 to 3.6 can be painful if you go about it the wrong
way, but otherwise it is pretty straightforward. I don't propose to give
a blow-by-blow account, but this should be sufficient...

1. Make sure all vital applications and files are backed up.

2. Obtain a copy of the new RISC OS 3.6 !Boot application, as its
structure is somewhat different to that of the 3.5 one. Do *not* use a
copy of a friend's 3.6 !Boot, as this is fraught with danger!! Instead,
use a 'virgin' copy off the CD ROM disc supplied with the StrongARM
upgrade; it has copies of both the 3.5 and 3.6 !Boot applications in
case of mishaps. If you don't have a CD ROM drive then get the files on
floppy from a friend instead.

3. Move the old !Boot application into a folder called, say, OldBoot,
and replace it with the new one.

4. Move the Chars, Draw, Edit, Help and Paint applications from the
$.Apps folder into a folder called, say, OldApps, as these are now
provided in ROM.

5. If you have a Cumana CD ROM drive, find the !BootIDECD application
that should have been in the old !Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk folder, and
copy just the single module !BootIDECD.islcd_2 into the new PreDesk
folder. You don't need the rest of the application, just the module.

6. Power down the machine tidily and change the ROMs. Take care!
ROM-1 socket change chip from 0297,521-01 to 1203,101-01.
ROM-2 socket change chip from 0297,522-01 to 1203,102-01.

7. Power the machine back on, holding down the 'R' key to reset the CMOS
configuration RAM. Don't forget to do this!!

8. If you have the aformentioned CD ROM drive, then you *must*
*UNPLUG CDFSSoftATAPI otherwise the machine will freeze later. It is
then vital to reboot the machine before continuing to step 9, for the
same reason. If you make a mess of this, and freeze the machine, go back
to step 7.

9. Reset the appropriate configuration options after double-clicking on
!Boot, including changing the number of CD ROM drives to 1 if
appropriate. When the CD icon appears on the icon bar, check the icon
bar menu Configure=>Drives is also set to 1, otherwise you won't be able
to access the drive from DOS and Windoze if you have a PC card. You may
also need to reconfigure certain podules etc., eg SCSI cards, to get
them to function. Also, if you have an Acorn 16-bit sound card, then you
will need to run the Install application off the support floppy disc.

Once the machine is up and running again with the new ROMs and !Boot
application, it's just a question of copying over any modules,
applications etc. from the old !Boot application as and when you find
the need for them. Any modules that you need from the old
!Boot.Resources.!System.Modules folder should be copied into the new
!Boot.Resources.!System.360.Modules folder.

Happy upgrading!

 73 from Rick
