This is to repeat my thanks, already sent individually, to those who
responded to my request for help. In order of receipt they were:
Phil G0COA, Neil G4RQN, Rick G4BLT, Bob G4AEL, Peter G7UUV, Ian 2E1ENA, and
Alex LA0GV; Phil and Rick several times.
The balance of opinion lay with the handshaking, and I believe that is
correct. I had XFROM set at ON, which is the default with the PK232, and I
have never changed it.
I sent a message to Garry G4FRO @ GB7IMB asking whether !TNC used hardware
handshaking, but have had no reply so far.
The long thoughtful message from Alex LA0GV described his similar
experiences with a PC clone and WINDOWS TERMINAL and WINPACK. This message
was 4k long and luckily I left it in the memory. This morning I reverted to
9600 baud, and tried reading it again with XFLOW ON and OFF. At first I
thought there was no difference, but then I saw that right at the end the
text was garbled with XFLOW ON and not with XFLOW OFF. XFLOW will now
remain OFF; we shall see if there is any further trouble.
Points of interest which I have learned:
The A5000 serial port is good to at least 19k2, but dodgy at 38k4
(Rick).
Bob told me "Type '*help SerialDeviceDriver' and you should see 'Serial
Device 0.22 (09 Dec 1992)'; if not this is almost certainly part of your
problem". I did, and I see "Serial Device 0.21 (06 March 1992)". So there's
a thought! He also mentions David Pilling's "Serial Buffer" module, which
he regards as excellent, and essential if you are using a modem at 19,200.
Thanks again, all. The ARCHIM help club lives!
