Unlike Rick, apart from the missing link (DTR) on my serial lead, once
I had configured !DemConfig, I managed to get access to the net with
no problems. I was amazed!

It has to be said that Alan Hassey who put the starter pack together
has done a splendid job and he does encourage folk to Email him.
Indeed some of the problems that Rick encountered have been dealt
with, for example, !SerialDev will now be put on the root directory of
the pack.

Clearly the software is improving all the time and upgrades seem to
come out fairly frequently. I've just upgraded to TCPIP 2.04 and this
has the advantage of repeatedly calling for Email, instead of having
to do it manaully. Not bad for freemans!

TCPIP itself seems really poor in terms of documentation, it's taken
me ages to work out there is a very useful Macro facility which makes
entry of FTP, and Telnet commands much quicker. I've not tried it as
yet, but it seems that you just type the FTP site in the window, enter
the macro window (but not the sub-menu), press FTP and your anonymous
etc log in is done automatically.

I've not looked at it myself but I've been told that a useful guide to
the net can be FTP'd from :

ftp://sluxa.slu.edu.edu/pub/millesjg/newusers.faq

One I have got and can recommend is Zen and the Internet from

ftp:ftp.csn.net/pub/net/zen

I also recommend PRINTING out the following docs...

FAQ Using Acorns for Internet access
Help on Newsbase
!TTFN help doc
Internet starter pack info

My next major task is to try and get some info on the WWW. It seems
that this is the obvious place for a beginner to get info and explore.
It's rather ironic that seems to be as far as Arc users are concerned
the least documented and most difficult (?) area to get onto. It seems
there are two browsers ArcWeb and Webster, but which is best????

The more you know, the less you know............
