Thanks very much for the comments thus far everyone. From what I have read
the only bad thing about the d700a is the fact you cant flash it. It's a
shame but that is such a big strike against it. Even if Kenwood were the
only ones who could update it I'd be much happier about it. The way Garmin
does updates works VERY well. As it is I believe I will buy one. As has
been said I can always add a HamHUD V or something like it in the future.

The HamHUD V does sound cool, I did realize that they wouldn't be available
at Dayton this year, just that I would be able to see a sample of what it
can do.

I haven't been active on APRS other that "listening" on RF and TCPIP from
time to time.

Take care,
Kevin

Yep, I already do that....and another ham puts up the Lincoln NE
repeater....

What else would be useful?

While your zipping through on Interstates, what would you like to see?

Around here, in Winter, I'd love road closure information, possibly road
conditions in general. I'm not sure how to do that without spamming
everything though.

Maryland has a web page that shows the speed of traffic under most
overpasses throughout the commuter roads. I wrote a routine that would
scan that web page, pull out the speeds, and post APRS speed-post objects.
Absolutely a perfect application for the mobile commuter.

Problem is, my routine was written in Qbasic and so it would not run
real-time. I had to save the WEB page to a text file, then let my routine
run. So far I havent found anyone with real-time on-line programming
talent that would take on the project.

I would say it would only take a good programmer a few hours to do.
Probably one hour for the basic function and a few hours to clean it up.

Garmin's are personal devices that have no need to be compatible with each
other. On the other hand, the stability of APRS as a common protocol
instead of a constantly moving target of bell's and whistles has a certain
value in maintining on-air-compatibility.

As a communicaitons system, the intent of APRS was to make sure that all
recepients saw the same tactical info in the same context. Without
consistency, a tower-of-babble results and communications reliability is
deminished in some cases instead of enhanced.

In that sense, there is value in the fact that the radio cannot be flashed
and will always be compatible with all the other tens' of thousands of
D700's out there, without having to download a new "version" every month or
so for the life of the radio.

Just the flip side.

Thanks, David -- something weird is going on here, I'm missing a LOT of
email it appears.

What about putting local Highway Patrol offices out as an object?
Sometimes these offices are marked with signs off the main roads but in an
emergency it might be nice to know where they are... Just a thought.

Have a look in your "Spam" filter. My Rogers email account tags some of the
aprssig emails as spam and puts them into the web based email spam folder.

Kevin

I purchased my first D700 a little over a month ago. I wish I had done that
several years ago. The radio works great for ARPS and voice. I purchased
the keyboard interface, so in an emergency I could handle email (WL2K) or
short messages a lot easier/faster. I also wanted a way to see what other
APRS stations were in my area without having to open the details screen.
So, I purchased a G4T display.

I mounted both the D700 and G4T directly behind the steering wheel. This
way I can drive and hardly take my eyes off the road to see what is going on
around me APRS wise.

I'm planning a trip across the country in late summer/early fall, probably
going East on Route 40 to the Washington DC area. Then up the coast to New
England, and back across the country on route 90 to the Seattle area, then
down the coast back to the LA area. I think this combination of equipment
will work well.

I've used my laptop with UI-View, but my wife gets tired of holding the
laptop and you can't really take your eyes off the road to look at the
screen while driving 70 mph.

I hope that stations along the way are broadcasting Tornado Warnings,
freqs/pl's of local repeaters and other information.

Many will probably say that I should have waited until after Dayton in case
Kenwood or someone else introduces a newer radio.
