The BCON button on the Kenwood is a single or double press. If it is more
than that, then the radio was not set up properly for APRS(which is not the
factory default). If you use the Kenwood for APRS, you have to configure
the MENU system to place all the APRS function buttons permanently on the
soft keys. If this "display option mode 3" is not set, then I agree,
accessing the APRS functions is not as handy. But why have an APRS radio
and not have it properly configured for APRS buttons foremost?

If the radio menu system is properly set for APRS, then the front panel
buttons are very handy and give you instant access to everything you need:

LIST | P.MON | BCON | MSG | POS

LIST gives you a station list. And if digi sysops in your area have
properly configured the DIGI's for the "Local Voice Repeater Initiative"
then the LIST will also contain the locally receommended FREQ for voice
contact.

The P.MON button lets you see a full screen of incoming FULL packets
including all path infor and all header info. Very userful for network
troubleshooting.

The BCON button either togles BEACONING on or off, or forces a POSIT-NOW.

MSG brings up the message list

POS brings up a large display of your lat/long and speed and time.

Hope that helps.

For what it is worth, 85% of all mobiles that receive-and-display APRS in
the mobile use the D7 or D700. The HAM-HUD is the only other non-PC that
also has a decoding and display system and it represents some of that other
15%.

To me while mobile, receiving and seeing what is around me on APRS is
actually more important than transimtting... That's what APRS is all
about... But of course, if you receive you also transmit so that others
can see you too.

They announced a possible new radio back at the Digital Comms Conference in
September... It will be intreresting to see what they might be showing at
Dayton?

I hate to be a boob but the info is in the instruction manual. Use the
specialized communications book, not the other that just gives radio info.
You need the book that deals with packet operations.

I programmed the "CALL" button on the mic to toggle the BCON on or off. In
my particular situation, I really don't use the call channel on a regular
basis, and for the few times I do need/want it, it's just a single keypress
on the control head. Mapping it to the BCON function is much more practical
for my needs, and far easier than reaching for the control head, even if
the APRS functions are "front and center" on the display.

Subject: [aprssig] APRS in KC Floods?

Hello,
I am wondering if APRS is being used to help provide support in Kansas
City? It would seem that it should be well positioned to be passing
information such as flood water level or other tactical information to
support planning or relief efforts.

Is there anyone in the Naples FLA area that would like to mentor a new APRS
user there? Reply to Kim and me. Thanks

If all you intend to use the radio for is APRS, fine radio. If you plan to
use it for any other applications like winlink, read the archives here and
in the winlink groups. The design was optimized for APRS which means it
does not do other modes well, particularly volume data transfers.

Wow, lots of thoughts here.
1) The specialize manual does tell you about packet, but it doesn't tell
you anything about what the best settings would be for your event or even
what the New-N paradigm settings are.

2) What is your plan? 144.39? Working with other existing digis? Working
on a private freq? How many hops covers the course? Are Igates used?

3) Rumor has it that many digis in Georgia are using the obsolete settings?
SO are you going to try to be compatible with them or operate with the
higher reliability settings of the New-N?

4) Without a full understanding of all of the above, then it is hard to
suggest anything.
