I disagree with that assessment, though as I say, in this case it is a
volunteer. However, for many years it was the county comm director who was
the licensee. This rule applies to actual operating, not serving as the
legal control operator for an "automatically controlled telemetry station".

Is there a single communication in APRS, or for that matter ham radio in
general, that cannot be furnished through other radio services? With cell
phones, wireless internet, marine HF, FRS, et. al., all of ham radio is
illegal under this rule!

Hi Curt,

Thanks for the info!

More questions, below...

Greg.

Ah, ok. I had changed it to the max (60min) to lessen the load on the
system, since my info doesn't change much. Guess I went too far.

Ok, found that. But, there are three options in the next frame down
that are currently not checked:
- Transmit compressed objects/items
- Activate Alternate Net
- Disable posit dupe-check
I assume I leave them off?

There is also a field for typing in a string, but it's not labeled.
What goes there? Currently is says "XASTIR".

I guess I'm skeptical about how much value this would have, since I
live in a bit of a hole. We're by a creek, so by definition I have hills
on two sides. The antenna currently is a twin lead Jpole hanging
on the wall in the shack, on the first floor of the house. Height above
ground is maybe 8', depending on where you measure to. Height
above the street level is about zero (the lot slopes down). Power is
5 watts. There is a good digi and igate 21.3 miles from here (K6FGA-1)
on Banner Mt. Fortunately, it is down stream, so I can hit it reliably.
Is adding my little 5w station to the RF clutter a benefit or just more
QRM?

I guess the program knows where on the Internet to aim the traffic,
as I see no place to configure it.

One more question: A number of the postings related to old vs new
addressing (wide vs wide n-n) talk about needing to upgrade the
hardware (TNC, presumably). Is my MFJ TNC ok, needing new
software, or does this even matter when using XASTIR?

One thing that can be an option though is to contact your nearby iGate
operator and request that they push the posit out for you.

Here in the Palm Springs, CA area, my iGate (K6KIT-11) watches for the
IRLP3180 (AK6E-15) and pushes it out via a single hop through the local
digi (INDIO).

Subject: [aprssig] APRS units needed for Race June 3rd

Hello All,
We have a half iron man race coming up in Macon, GA on June 3rd. I am
still trying to get people in our local clubs to help with getting some
aprs trackers and digis together, but I have not had much response. I
wanted to ask on the big list if you are in the area of Middle Georgia
if you would be willing to let us use some of your APRS gear.

In total I am still in need of at least 2 trackers and at least 2 more
digis. We will be in a hilly area and I know that we have to cover the
area in order for our trackers to work well. Please respond to me at
ae4xo_at_arrl.net and we will chat.

Thanks!

OpenTracker+, not the OpenTracker 1x. Close! The number at the end
indicates the case style. The original OpenTracker was the OT1, the metal
case is the OT1m, and the longer, opaque plastic case is the OT1x. The new
case style is an 'r' suffix in my own drawings and documentation, but it's
the only one so far so I didn't want to confuse things further.

The important thing is that all OpenTracker 1 series kits take the same
processor and the same firmware. The plus kits have a new processor and
new firmware.
