Subject: [aprssig] WOW! Iowa is really with it on the voice repeater objects.

On the road again traveling from Pasadena, Ca to East Lansing, MI to make
what I call the annual home maintainance and PC upgrade service call to my
mother and sister. Passing through Iowa, my mobile UIview laptop lit up
with this:

This is the western half of the state. The metro area at the left of the
screen is the Omaha, NE area and the metro area at the right is Des Moines,
IA. I screen capped this just moments ago, and uploaded it to my webserver
via the FREE WiFi hot spots provided at Iowa Interstate rest stops. (I am
also posting this message from the same hotspot.)

[The coolness of this ALMOST offsets the idiocy I monitored on 30M HF APRS
last night in eastern Colorado on I-76. A (so far) nameless W9 was
beaconing every minute on an ECHO digi path. Propagation was quite good on
30M last night -- I was hearing the original beacon and 2-3 digied versions
every time. And this was a HOME STATION !!!!! ]

If you use UITRACE TRACE,30 then it supports TRACEn-N with dup suppression
under 30 seconds. That was the old way.

Most DIGIPeaters undere New-N are using "UITRACE WIDE,30". This sets them
up as TRACEABLE WIDEn-N digipeaters.

But we do not want every D700 to be a digi, so by making them all be
"UITRACE TEMP,10" then they become TEMPn-N digis and why not reduce the
dupe time to 10 seconds so that faster retry times can be used in these
emergency situations.

Setting the UITRACE parameter is setting the ROOT string. It then turns
this into a n-N decrementing digipeating system.

There is no need for the explicit TEMP1-1, since any such occurrence will
be digipeated by the UITRACE TEMPn-N function.

Hope that helps
Bob

Hummh... Well not a "P" overlay since that is a PACCOM configured New-N
digi. I think I would just use the satellite Dish symbol. Most APRS
clients will quickly detect that it is an Igate and will so mark it.

Put in your position comment text any of the other brag details.

It sounds like the APRS activity has dried up down there and so there is
little support for fixing the reliability of the WX digis, and so even the
primary objective is not being well met. Maybe it is time for the WX folks
to upgrade the digis to New-N and this might grow back the APRS users and
grow back the WX network to meet their needs, and a larger support group to
keep it reliable? Just an observation... Bob

Maybe you don't understand, the weather stations are owned and maintained
by the county. And it IS meeting their primary objective, the weather data
from all the Keys station is being received very reliably at the EOC in
Marathon, in the middle of the Keys. It is not making it out to the
mainland well, but that is not their primary objective.

And here is another view as I got closer to Des Moines

I bought a GPS18 PC and you can just cut the leads off - the PC version
adaptor takes 8-30 V down to 5 volts, effectively becoming a LVC.

I took pictures of the inside of one too, but that was after I connected it
to +12V.
