It is incumbent on everyone of us as users of the APRS system to provide
encouragement, and assistance to all sysops to get these things changed.
These old legacy systems have held us back for now 15 years, and about 3
years ago, we decided it was time to move on. Then New-N Paradigm
resulted.

The improvments to the system have been *dramatic*.

See http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/aprs/fix14439.html

If the existing sysops don't want to do anything, we must still get these
legacy systems set to the new paramters or new volunteers will just have to
put up alternate digis. And users will have to stop using RELAY,WIDE to
discourage their existance.

While we are at it, have the SYSOPS add the locally-recommended VOICE
repeater objects to their digis, so that travelers see these
reeommendations on the front panel of their radios as they drive through.

See http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/localinfo.html

We also owe it to our fellow hams to alert anyone we see that is still
using RELAY and WIDE as their path to also change it, since they are not
getting out.

Just an hour ago, I heard a complaint/rumor very high up in the AMSAT
organization that the APRS network doesn't really work that well. They
lost track of someone for over 3 hours driving through the entire length
of PA.

When I checked the path on the particular mobile in question, I find that
he is using RELAY,WIDE. No wonder he isnt being tracked. And oh-by-the
way, congratulations for PA sysops for setting their DIGIS correctly.

NOW IS THE TIME. The Great Annual APRS Pilgrimage to Dayton is only 3
weeks away. We must make every effort to get the network and users into
shape. Please see:

Subject: [aprssig] Best TNC for use as portable digi?

I'm wondering what TNC everyone would recommend for a small, portable (read:
balloon-borne) APRS digipeater. I had a KPC-3+ that I was planning to fly
on Field Day, but it is now somewhere in Lake St. Clair... Is the KPC-3+
still the best choice or is there something better?

Thanks and 73,

A Tracker2 if you can get your hands on one. They're still in beta.

I got another batch of proto C boards in, but only a few processors and I
don't have time to build any myself at the moment until I get settled into
the new house. You might be able to use a T2-135 board (the internal type
for the DR-135T) but it's built for a radio with no pre/de-emphasis. It's
small and light, though.

I *might* be able to scrounge up one of the original prototypes, built to
fit the same case as the original OpenTracker and the TinyTrak3. Only about
half of them worked, thanks to a problem with the oscillator circuit.
Without the connectors it only weighs a few grams - what's your weight
budget?

Well, I was planning on the KPC-3+, so "light" is relative... :)

If the weight is down in the grams, then I just might fly it on a
superpressure instead of a solar Montgolfiere - hadn't considered that
there might be something so small!

I assume that the power requirements for this would be dwarfed by those of
the radio and/or GPS - correct?

Thanks!

Pretty much. Should be in the 20-30 mA range. I don't really remember for
that particular version. It doesn't have an ST202 like the newer ones, so
that saves a few mA.

One advantage of the full-size board is the high-side switch. It'll control
a load up to 30 amps, assuming you keep the duty cycle reasonable. I used
it (with a 9 amp switch) for my resistor-based cutdown device on my own
balloon, though I didn't wind up using it.

Found a pic of the old board here:

If the paths absolutely had to be changed to the old settings, use the
PM profiles in the D700s. Leave the "New-Paradigm" settings in your
default, and program and of the five PM slots to the old settings. So
when you relaly have to resort to them, it's a two-keypress operation,
rather than dozens. The D7 is not as simple to switch, lacking the PM
option. (This also comes in handy when visiting places that have both
VHF and UHF APRS systems...WA and BC come to mind.)

I ran into this issue while in NC last month. The small-town digi was on
the new paradigm, and the big-city wide-area digi (25 miles away) using
RELAY instead of WIDEn-N, but oddly enough using SSn-N. Can't figure out
the logic behind that move.

Hope this helps.

But remember that both models have the short cuts in them. To do a path of
RELAY,WIDE, simply key in R,W. And to do a path of WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2 simply
key in W1,W2.

I asked Kenwood to put those shortcuts in there so that it would be easy to
use. The BAD news that in most places we don't want WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2, but
we want WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 so that the second hop is pre-decremented.

In that case the only short cut is W1,WIDE2-1.
