Subject: [aprssig] More OpenTracker+ info

I've had a few questions about the new kit, so here's some more information.

The OT+ is not the same as the Tracker2, and it's not intended to replace
it. The Tracker2 will still have a lot more features (digi, Garmin support,
command console, hardware-based demodulator) and will be the more expensive
option. The OT+ just replaces the original OpenTracker for users needing a
more basic tracker. It does share a little of the T2's firmware, mostly the
APRS decoding stuff (for the 'anti-tracker' features) - minus altitude and
comment parsing.

The surface mount version (which hasn't been fully tested yet) should be
usable as a MIM substitute (at about half the price). It has 9 inputs that
can be either analog (10-bit resolution) or digital. It also has a Dallas
1-wire bus, extra timer channel (or digital I/O) pin, and outputs for two
LEDs. Those could double as general I/O if needed. There are a few more
unused I/O lines that could be brought out if I went to a larger board.

It's hard to gauge the size of the regular OT+ from the picture, but it's
about 1/2" longer than the OT1x. The MCU is in an unusual 32-pin shrink-DIP
package with 0.07" lead pitch, so it's not really as big as it looks at
first glance. The resistors are also 1/8 watt types, as opposed to the 1/4
watt resistors used in the older kits.

So far there's no remote control capability - just waypoint output - but
that's a possibility if the demodulator works out well enough. And the
firmware is still open source, and will compile with the free version of the
CodeWarrior compiler, so you can always add your own code if you're
comfortable with C.

Oh, and since I wound up with a bunch of extra unprinted OT1x cases, I'm
having some perf boards (plated-through holes on 0.1" centers) made up to
fit them. You could drop an OT+ SMT module in there and wire up your own
custom tracker with extra sensors, relays, or whatever. Or you could just
use it as a DB9 breakout box or something.

Any other questions? Suggestions for features?

Ah, that reminds me! I need to get some more 8X to fix my HF screwdriver.
I'll try to be on 15 or 20 SSB for the trip. I added on about another 5
extra hours of driving to the trip, since I moved back to Virginia Beach,
Va.

Thats nice when you have a D700, but I run seperate radios for voice and
APRS. VHF Motorola Maxtrac for APRS and Icom IC-2720 for voice (primarily
UHF).

I'll ask the question again. Is anyone planning for an APRS Pizza get
together this year?

I haven't heard anything (other than the questions about it) but I'll be
there if there's going to be one. Does TAPR normally put it on?

With many thanks to Bill, Curt, Scott and Tom for their valuable input, I'm
pleased to say that I'm well on my way to writing a receive-only software
system (for those of us who are unlicensed, but quite interested). Thank
you for the nudge in the right direction.

Sincerely,
MJ

Scott,
In the past a local Dayton ham has arranged for a get together at Marion's
Piazza 50 E STROOP RD DAYTON, OH. Someone in the group acts as an emcee and
anyone that has something to say gets a chance. Usually all of the APRS
programmers give a short spiel about any recent changes to their product. I
think that we normally have about 40 or more APRSers show up.

Subject: [aprssig] Speech to Text

Cell phones these days are doing a great job of using voice recognition for
controlling various command functions. Has anybody seen a small
application or device with speech input and RS-232 output? That would
sure be a cool way to control the D700 (or other aprs applications) in the
moving vehicle. Is this in the Pocket PC or current Palm devices?

Thanks,
Bill - WA7NWP

Great photos.

What are the two white boxes forward of you aux battery?

and a photo at the top of a full prius would be nice. Dont go out and do
it for me, of course, but it would introduce the page more wholistically
from the beginning maybe>

Or maybe that is becuase at this instant, i happen to be looking for a
Prius, and radio is secondary, hi hi...

But your approach seems very well engineered!

Steve

I have a Ford Escape Hybrid. HF is almost useless when the vehicle is in
motion. S9 noise that increases upon using the brakes. When coasting its
its around S6.
When parked there are no issues. The engine starts and stops to charge the
battery. There is a full sized auto battery in the Escape. Of course I
only get around 31 mpg. I've spoken with the maintenance managers at
several garages and they have no idea how to reduce the RF noise. Any
ideas?

I use a Yaesu 857 for HF and a D700 for APRS. I've not seen much of a
interference issue at VHF

With this discussion on Prius as a UPS, I thought I'd share some photos of a
battery backup that I put together for my APRS digipeater station this week.

The station has VHF and UHF transceivers and a Pentium III computer. This
will also provide backup power for several wireless Internet links.

An overall view

Access to UPS

Additional ventilation

This is the first such modification that I've made to install larger
(external) batteries to a UPS. I've been testing it for about a day and it
seems to work as expected. I'm interested to know if anyone else has done
this and if there are any issues that I should be concerned with.
