Quite a few people agree with you regarding the backup power. It's pretty
common in the rocky mountains to have stations that are solar powered,
primarily because they are in places where bringing in commercial power is
not an option rather than the emergency comm aspect, but it's still good
for emergency communication regardless.
That said, internet communication certainly has use in an emergency -
sometimes someone 300 miles away does need to know where a particular asset
is located, and HF isn't necessarily going to be reliable enough for that
(especially with less and less HF stations enabling ECHO) - think the case
where the receiving station is within the skip zone, etc. We need to be
very careful how we talk about extra capabilities - an RF-only system
without grid power needs is definitely a huge asset to an area. But so are
even home IGates!

Probably the best way to differentiate these stations is in the comments
field. I like using abbreviations to identify the capabilities of my
station. For example, I have an APRS station setup in a tall building
downtown. It works as a digipeater and an Internet gateway. My comments
sections says, "PHG8430 IG,W2,WTXn LUBBOCK." The PHG figure describes its
RF capabilities. IG indicates that it is an Internet Gateway. W2 means
that it supports paths of WIDE2-2 or less. WTXn means that it fully
supports SSn-N paths contained to the ARRL West Texas Section.
Having a PHG figure in your comment is the best way to indicate that you
are on RF. I guess that if you are preventing your station from being
gated to the Internet by using RFONLY in your path setting, then you could
put RFONLY in your comment to reflect this condition.

Thanks for the comments...
The problem with the tags in the comment fields is that it doesn't allow
selecting stations on an APRS map. Hmmm - given that it looks like the
only real options is a station icon since most applications don't allow
selecting displays by SSID but do by icon.
By RF only I just mean that my station won't have an Internet connection.
It will still depend on the local, and not so local, Igates for extended
connectivity.

I'd like to do something like that. Last time I brought it up, and
proposed an alternative energy symbol, I got a lot of negative feedback.
But since I am bringing up a solar/wind power system at home and want to
have APRS supporting efforts at energy conservation, I think I will look
around for an alternative energy station symbol.
Probably a HOUSE symbol with a slanted solar panel and a windmill out back?

I think my only opposition to this was that I'd rather see a capabilities
bitfield, so you don't have to pick only one symbol.

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to do. If you only want to
see stations that are transmitting on RF, don't connect to an APRS server,
just monitor 144.390 MHz. All the stations that you see on the APRS map
will be on RF.
