I'll ask this on the D7 list as well, but I think I'll get a more useful
response here.
I'm revisiting my antenna choice for my vehicles. I've been using a couple
of different mag mount antennas which are very flexible. That's nice from a
stealth point of view (they're pretty much invisible), but the flex causes
enough frequency shift that the D7 doesn't decode most packets while in
motion.
I'm giving up on mag mounts, and will probably use a Diamond K600 trunk lid
mount. The question, then, is what antenna to attach to it.
On another vehicle, I'm probably stuck with a through-glass antenna, though
I'm not sure of that yet.
I'd really like to hear from folks that have had good luck with a mobile
D7.
Thanks!

One thing to keep in mind is that NMEA data entering a D7 from the cable
will degrade your reciever. There are various web sites that explain how
you are usually transmitting better than you think while mobile. But I use
a regular dual band antenna on my truck with an adapter from SMA to BNC and
it works pretty good.

I use a glass-mount dual band antenna with good success. It's actually
mounted near the bottom of the window, to keep the top of the antenna below
the 6'4" height of the garage I park in at work.

Huh? I'm not trying to pick a nit, but low speed serial data causes
receiver degradation how?
What do you mean degradation? Reduced sensitivity? Reduced selectivity?
Intermodulation distortion? Overload?

I wasn't aware of the D7 issue, but I know the Alinco DR-135 tends to get
some noise on the speaker from the GPS serial data. There's definitely
some crosstalk going on.
Don't forget that even with low-speed serial data, you can have fast slew
rates. A MAX232 will slew from -6 volts to +6 volts in about 1
microsecond. I wonder if adding some capacitance to the line would help...
just dampen the slew rate out until it's just good enough for the RS-232
receiver in the radio to work reliably.

And *EVEN MORE IMPORTANT*: DON'T SET VOICE ALERT WHEN NOT PRESENT AT THE
RIG, ABLE, AND WILLING TO ANSWER CALLS.
How I do that is switching between two memory channels based on whether or
not I feel like answering calls.
And of course it never hurts to try 146.52 if you see a nearby mobile (on a
GPS screen if so equipped). I had a nice QSO last week as a result of
giving a call on 52 after seeing their station icon. I encourage people to
also monitor 52 simplex if not monitoring a local repeater (the D700 makes
this rather easy to do - I typically keep one side on 144.39 and the other
on 146.52).

Subject: [aprssig] APRSPOINT
We are starting to setup for our annual June Triathlon here in Macon, GA. I
was looking into whether or not my APRS+SA would do what I need it to do for
the race and I ran across APRSPOINT. Any body use that program? It would
make me bail out on Delorme Street Atlas by having to purchase another
mapping program, but I wondered if it would be better for what we need to
do.
Please contact me if you have some experience with this program. Thanks!

To Dayton, we also need all SYSOPS within 500 miles of Dayton to make sure
their DIGI is putting out the LOCAL recommended Travelers Repeater freq
objects to inform all travelers where to find other travelers.
These objects show up on the front panel of the APRS radios and the HAMhud.
See the details on: http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/localinfo.html
