Subject: RE: [aprssig] Bar Code Formats for APRS

I know this goes against the grain of APRS in principal, but maybe there
would be very specific situations where a "connected mode" APRS would be
appropriate, such as bar codes? When you need near-100% reliability for the
packet getting ACK'd. Having the ability for say a certain event to use
this mode??

What would be slick would be if you could program a bar code reader with a
prefix and/or suffix..... I'm sure could be done with an additional pic
chip. so you scan a bar code that represents a callsign and the reader
appends the position and sends. would be good for applications like
scanning runners past a checkpoint.

ok, heres a response to what ive gotten so far...

[commercial content deleted]

Don't hesitate too much, but i'm not smart enough to make it work (well,
maybe i am, but i'm a little too busy right now)... I'm looking for
something fairly simple that will work immediately with a TNC and radio or
D700. I'm not overly concerned with a "you need a TNC2 or better" type
caveat, so long as it's not "you need a D700, period" - now i will say,
having a bunch of tracker type devices might not be a bad thing, the problem
is getting enough of them on a budget...

I AM looking for something that can show the data at a glance... so i will
most likely need a custom GUI...

AT A GLANCE, I want to be able to tell:

"I have 4 competitors on stage 1 (checked in, not checked out)"

"I have 12 competitors in transit between stage 1 and stage 2"

"I have 7 competitors on stage 2"

"I have 20 competitors in transit to service from stage 2"

or

"I lost 2 competitors in service (they're still there after a long time)"

I really don't need it to be REAL TIME, and the clocks that we use don't
put out data (that i know), so it's more of a crude tracking system.

the problem with "retries" might be an issue. As far as "connected" mode,
we would need to be able to connect 6 - 8 stations to net control....
though this might allow stations to connect through other stations within
range, and might eliminate the need for digipeaters, so long as we had 50W
radios..... right?

I was considering using a PIC or similar microcontroller to conver the
barcode scanner data (usually PS/2 type data) to a packet, adding stuff
(callsign, tactical call, etc.) and sending it.... the nice thing about
this would be that i could have a set of interfaces or trackers for the
entire event, give a crew (we worked stage 9 and 14, so i would have start
9 and finish 14 in my kit) both units, and swap them out per the stage i'm
working.

so many ideas... so little expertise in my head....

Has anyone used APRS+SA on Vista yet? I really enjoy it, but just got
new Vista machines for work and want to know if I should load it or work
on trying to get Xastir running in some form.

Well, I don't think getting these barcode scanners up and running on
DOSAPRS would be all too difficult, except maybe for the "me" generation
appliance op that never has configured DOS.

But here's another novel idea I've never heard suggested before.

The barcode scanners have a PCMCIA slot, as do a LOT of similar devices, as
well as almost all fairly modern laptops. If we had a PC-Card based TNC it
would be trivial to turn almost any of these devices into a full fledged
APRS client. All you'd need would be an HT or other external radio, easily
interfaced by a simple dongle.

Anyone out there considered a Type-II PC Card TNC?

There used to be a 1 and 4-port ISA TNC card, but it never really
caught on because it was introduced just about the time PCI showed up.

Scott - any interest in packaging a TinkTrak into PC Card form factor?

Almost all manufacturers have abandoned the PCMCIA standard. AFAIK, only
three laptop makers are including PC Card support in current models - those
are: Sony, Fujitsu, and Toshiba on selected models.

I just purchased a Fujitsu Lifebook A6020 for Vista development at work as
I have a need for PC Card support

PC cards have been replaced by the Express Card standard.

Maybe so.

But for us, Hams, is this important?

Do most Hams run out and buy a new $2000 laptop just to play APRS?

No.

Do most Hams, tens of thousands, have laptops 3-5 yrs old?

Probably.

So do most Ham laptops have the ability to utilize a PC-Card device.

Yes.

I haven't been paying attention to the laptops sold in the last 6 months.

I honestly don't know what an Express Card is.

I don't have a laptop with one, so I don't need to care what it is, yet.

To me, it means replacing all the existing PC card hardware I have, in
favor for shortsighted marketing of gadgets and whizmo's I don't need.

I still have computers that have ISA and EISA slots.

I still use serial ports regularly. Even tho there are still NEW laptops
sold with serial,

We continue to have folks lamenting the demise of the RS-232 port, let's
throw all our serial devices away. I'll go pry the DCD and DTE ports off
my H-89 CP/M machine now.

I'll continue to as long as they do what I need them to and the peripherals
work.

There will never be an Express Card device produced for the Amateur market,
IMHO.

So why do I care as long as my current cards still work and do all I need
them to.

Why do MOST Ham peripherals still have serial connectivity?
Because that's what most Hams' computers have, and PCMCIA too.

I don't live my life based on the marketing strategy of some corporate bean
counter.

I'll make my situation even tougher to solve...

I don't want a computer at every client. I ONLY want a computer at net
control.

there's just not enough space or time at the start / finish control points
to allow for a computer to be set up....

maybe for something not QUITE as cramped... an on-road rally, or
something....

Sounds like you need to modify scott miller's opentracker to accept barcode
swipes instead of GPS data. Have it construct a fake posit report using the
name/callsign that you swipe. I'd use 3rd party format aprs packets.
