I was not able to get into this for most of the day. Guess it was to busy.

There is some discussion about trying to do something with APRS for RAGBRAI
(Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) however we have a
problem in that the route this year only goes through one community that
has any existing APRS infrastructure. Most of the route is in very rural
flatland areas.

I think, we should keep the same APRS net standards around the world not
only because of crossing-border travelers. Very important thing is to have
all APRS hardware and APRS software compatible for users around the world.
Is much easier to develop new projects if official standards are applied in
every corner of the world.

Bill,
I'm all the time busy and busy, next week on travel, again (now CA). Just
some thoughts about APRS and Vista. Maybe you are familiar with them all,
maybe not. I upgraded my OS to Windows Vista Ultimate. There was problem
with Precision Mapping 8, installed not running, some files missing. In
contact with Under Tow Software support, probably in few weeks should be
upgrade for Vista comps. So, I use PMap7 installed and run smoothly under
Vista. No problem at all with PMapServer707
Another APRS issue, UI-View is running under Vista, problem is with new help
files format http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607
I've installed ALogger 3.0.0 and there is no problem at all. Even help files
are showing up. Great! The KISS option is very practical. Is possible to add
another option in ALogger for AGWPE connection. In such case you can use one
piece of TNC/radio/antenna for many programs. Also you can connect to remote
site.
If you want to try connect to my APRS station in Poland, use AGWPE
connection to sr3wxa.no-ip.org port 8000
Then you can log local true RF traffic.

Subject: [aprssig] Weather station path?

I have a newly assembled K0RX weather station, which is a stand alone
station. It generates the packet tones and sends them to an attenuator so
they can be fed directly into a transmitter. I am running QRP, so hopefully
it won't cause to much QRM.

I've tested it, it talks to the RS232 port just fine, so the barometric
pressure calibration is complete. It needs only to be interfaced to a 2
meter HT through the external microphone connector.

It will transmit on 144.39 Mhz.

But, I need to know what path to program in. I know it's been discussed
here, but because I'm new, I'm not quite sure whether the advice I got from
a local I found on findu.com is correct.

I was told to use an unproto path of RELAY, WIDE2-2.

I'd like it to be digipeated locally, and to go through enough digi's so
that it makes the nearest internet gateway (wherever that is). I do find
other locals making the interent gateway, but they use some very off paths,
none of which are the same. And, I'm not quite sure what's right and what
isn't.

I think the biggest issue I can remember from previous discussions here is
that the RELAY path should not be used at all.

Can someone who has more experience suggest what path I should be using
please (Central Maine, USA).

Thanks,

Art

Actually, we had a hardware failure just as we were about to kickoff. Took
us a while to get it repaired but it is back up now.

That is correct... RELAY is obsolete in North America and should NOT be
used. Try a path of WIDE2-1 for a one hop path. If you can hit a 'high"
digi, your weather data will be visible anywhere in the footprint of that
digi. If you need a two-hop path to either spread your WX data a bit
further, or to hit an IGate, instead use WIDE2-2. Don't use WIDE1-1 from a
fixed station. Give these suggestions a try and see how you make out.

Just keep in mind that RELAY, WIDE, and TRACEn-N are obsolete in North
America. If you know anyone that is still using them, try some gentle
persuasion to get them to update their settings whether they are mobile
stations or digi operators. The "universal' setting in North America is
WIDE2-2 for fixed stations unless you need less in which case WIDE2-1 would
be recommended. For mobiles, WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 would be the recommended
setting. A few (very few) places might need a slightly longer path.

Is this close enough to central Maine?
www.findu.com/cgi-bin/near.cgi?lat=45.3&lon=-69.2&last=1&rate=1

It looks like a number of stations are using paths longer than the two hops.
It could be that more than two hops are needed, but I would be very
surprised. Some of the weather stations I looked at were using one or two
hop paths.

Will the D700 output raw packet data to the serial port in APRS mode? If
so, I could do a stripped-down version of the T2 firmware that'd handle the
decoding and Garmin output.

I don't know about that, but I do know the D700 has two speaker output
jacks - so you could set one side of the radio for APRS and set the radio
to use separate jacks for the separate sides of the radio. You would lose
voice alert, but I don't think that would matter (has *anyone* ever made a
random voice alert contact? It seems to be far easier to work rare DX than
to talk to another APRS user).
