Not sure smart beaconing is a desirable feature in all cases. Many users
are not interested in tracking themselves, but are interested in acquiring
information from other users or data sources (Wx objects etc).

As you pointed out, you cannot use voice alert with Tracker2 and the D700
(unless it is possible to obtain the audio at the discriminator etc).

While Tracker2 appears to have impressive capabilities, it may not be
suitable for users simply wanting to use an existing D7/D700 or TNC to
acquire data for display on a GPS.

I would be interested in a device which sends detailed Waypoint info to my
GPS using the Garmin Protocol and APRS icons, yet preserves all of the
features available with the D7/D700.

I am not sure what you are saying here;
I am running Voice Alert with my D700 with a subtone, after a setup
description from Bob WB4APR several months ago. But I might have
misunderstood you.

Subject: [aprssig] APRS SOFTWARE QUESTION

Are there any APRS software programs that do APRS, Dumb Terminal Packet,
AND come in versions for PC and MAC???

Ideally the screens and hotkeys would be identical whether user is on a Mac
or a PC.

Any help appreciated.

Except for the Dumb terminal packet, Xastir would be one choice.

Another choice would be WinAPRS/MacAPRS, which I _think_ might be fairly
similar to each other. They were programmed by two brothers and share much
of the codebase. There's a version of MacAPRS for OSX.

Perhaps a Java APRS client would fit the bill as well. I haven't tried any
so not sure.

My post referred to the use of a T2 (Tracker2) device connected to a D700.
This device uses audio input/output to decode and encode packets rather
than an RS232 interface to the internal TNC. It had been suggested the T2
could be used to send Waypoints with APRS icons to a Garmin receiver. See
earlier posts in the thread.

To my knowledge, All APRS programs do APRS and have dumb terminal screens
so you can talk directlly to the TNC from within the program. The original
MacAPRS and WinAPRS are nearly identical and just compied for the MAC and
Windows.

Id try macAPRS and WinAPRS

Subject: RE: [aprssig] HF Gateway Stations

In Setup,Station Setup, UI-View32 has symbol labels of:

HF Gateway /& (black diamond with G, no overlay character allowed by
UI-View32)
No. Diam'd \& (black diamond, any overlay character allowed by
UI-View32)
No. Diamond \a (red diamond, any overlay character allowed by
UI-View32)

So,
Symbol:No. Diam'd O'ly:I is often a IGate (two way, of course!)
Symbol:No. Diamond O'ly:W is often a Winlink (Telpac) station

And in the same manner,
Symbol:No. Digi O'ly:1 is a modern fill-in digi (WIDE1-1 only)
Symbol:No. Digi O'ly:S is a modern "WIDEn,SSn" full digi
