Digi owners, can you recommend a decent antenna that is inexpensive
(<=$100) for an APRS digipeater? I just installed a remote WX station and
he currently has a yagi on it pointing back to me and I have offered to
change it out with something omni-directional to enable digipeater
functions. I am seriously considering a Cushcraft Ringo Ranger, the site is
located at about 1900ft here in the mountains of East TN and the antenna
will be at the 50ft mark on the tower.
We will also be putting a packet node on 145.010 there as well and want to
use the same type of antenna for both, would the Ringo Ranger be a good
choice?

We are using the Diamond X-50A for our systems here. It is dual band,
rugged and runs about $100 from HRO.

I know some folks will disagree, but I've been having really good luck
running simple 1/4 wave antennas from arrow.
well. I've got several on mountain tops in Western Colorado and Eastern
Utah. I've even got one up on one of my towers here in Antarctica.
Survived it's first winter w/ 70 knot winds and ice without damage.
So far the oldest is out it's third winter, worst damage I've seen has been
a broken ground plane element. That site is still talking over a hundred
miles at times. The quarter wave works well for not shooting over the tops
of the local users down in the canyons. Most of the sites are anywhere
from 700 to 4000 feet HAAT.
Other nice thing is that it doesn't require a lot of vertical real estate
on the tower - only about 2'
Depends a lot on your terrain, but a lot of times gain doesn't always add
to your system. On the flip side, if I was setting things up over on the
plains with high towers, I'd be trying to squeeze lots of gain out of my
antennas.
I don't expect them to last as long as a good commercial (DB products, etc)
style antenna, but for the money they seem to work well.
YMMV

It looks rugged, but it won't survive in an alpine environment. The set
screw down at the bottom always works loose (speaking from experience x2)
when battered by 100-150 kph winds. I've never actually had the mount
break, but there was noticeable wear each time. When there is a bad
connection from the missing screw, it can introduce noise. For anywhere but
an alpine environment (ice and wind) I would recommend the X-50A.

I don't have their quarter wave, but I do have their very rugged dual-band
j-pole on a digi here right now. I'm quite impressed by how tough it looks,
but "here" is a non-alpine environment. However, we had lots of (major)
wind storms over the last month or two and it has survived.

I just built a plumber's special J-Pole out of the sturdiest copper pipe I
could find, soldered everything together, and mounted it on the side of the
house. I then grounded it (benefit of the J-Pole is the whole thing can be
DC-grounded), tying it to a ground rod directly under the antenna which is
in turn connected to the rest of my house's grounding system. I could
swing off of the antenna if I wanted to, it would easily support my weight.
I sealed it up pretty good so that it's water tight at the top and where I
mounted a PL-259 jack, but left a drain hole in the bottom just in case I
didn't seal things as well as I thought (I don't have to worry about
insects nesting inside where I live so having an opening is no big deal).
But my home station is in a valley and I can't put up a huge tower, and all
I cared about was reliable coverage within the valley. It does that
nicely. It's also relatively lightning safe, can survive 90MPH + wind that
it's been exposed to, and should be extremely easy to fix if anything goes
wrong.
That all said, I suspect there are 200 answers to the problem, but I would
recommend "simple" over gain if the weather is harsh or if you would have a
hard time accessing the site some of the time (or if like me want to
install it and forget about it - I haven't done anything other than
occasionally plugging in an antenna analyzer, verifying the coax connection
still looks like it's watertight, and banging it around a bit to see if
anything is loose - so far it's been very solid and I've done no repairs in
the last 6 years).

Subject: [aprssig] Homage To Bob / Kenwood Specialized Manual
Greeting to the Amateur radio community,by now many of you have been
reading to see how we can fully utilize our kenwood aprs radio beyond just
aprs by reading the kenwood specialize communication manual.
It is very important that you read this manual to follow me all the way to
understand me what i will be doing for all those ham who want to go beyond
the point of aprs and doing what the radio was intended to do.
please focus on page 1,2,3, look at page 3 and see the tnc set up and
information when you are using the tnc mail box this is vital
information.soplease read these information and also all the books on the
radio before touching your tnc,we have the experience your tnc could be
dead or the complete radio if your screw it up.
I am here to guide and walk all through this process,i will explain all the
software experience and radio reaction to operation of the data
communication aspect, since this project have started we had lost 3 tm-d700a
radios, following the manual tnc set up but,we have also found out there is
several models of this radio.
in the tnc you have menus that are not listed in the manual that need to be
activated base on certain operation,in the hand of the kenwood radio the
models are TH-D7A,TH-D7A(G),TH-D7AE,AND TH-D7AG you will need to know which
model you have also you have the TM-D700A AND TM-D700E what firmware you
have and tnc menu setting.
In previous email i mention the software i use,i miss out one LINK 700,yes
i use link 700 to do aprs, packet, console chat, tnc message mail box
operation,i really do not need a map with link 700 i see all the APRS in it
entirety and i work aprs station with link 700 just as if is
UI-VIEW,WINAPRS,AGWTRACKER,APRS+SA,with link 700 you have a greater
appreciation for the kenwood radios TM-D700A etc.
00.00 Z 8 PM LOCAL TIME i will be on my club echo link repeater 9Y4TTL NODE
# 280791
i will be doing some work on my the tm-d700a and link 700,ui-view,aprs+sa,
feel free to come up on echo link and call 9Z4FZ,i wiil be willing to talk
to any one if they have problem following me from the computer via email.
My kenwood lab including the following [3] TM-D700A,[3] TH-D7 AND [3] TS
2000,also i would like to pay HOMAGE to WB4APR BOB for having me reach so
far in my work of fully utilizing the radios beyond aprs.
Bob was right when he spoke of the tnc menu UITRACE AND UIFLOOD the default
is wrong and why kenwood did this only god knows Bob your work have
inspired me to go deep into the radios by kenwood and looking for other ways
on how to use as well the hidden actives about the radios.
WB4APR Bob on behalf of the TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO AMATEUR RADIO LEAGUE KENWOOD
APRS PROJECT TEAM keep up the good work and you have us here in the island
appreciating the work that you are doing thus shining your light for us to
help other hams as well..
