I've actually might have experienced this awhile back when I went to
Michigan. I was checking to see what APRS was in the area and someone
connected to me. I knew this because the "CON" came on in the TNC display.
There were packet exchanges of some sort and they weren't posits. I never
looked into it further because using connection oriented traffic is taboo
in APRS and figured that it was connecting to nothing anyway. Makes me
want to take another look.

I am sorry about my response. Please feel free to share any info on
Kenwoods and APRS that you have. Just so you know why you got some odd
reactions, all caps is SHOUTING to us here.
73 and welcome to the mailing list,

Yes you are correct,it could have been some one wanted to talk to you in
tnc mode, chat, packet or tnc console mode the radio 700a have the console
call sign but you need to input also the tnc call, yes the tnc mail call
page 46 MYMCALL that is the tnc call my tnc mail call is 9z4fz-1,the console
is 9z4fz-6 the radio carry 2 call ok.
once some one is connected to you it show up on the radio screen CON,when
you get a mail on the screen blink mail you have a mail, when you see MBOD on
your scree some one is in your mail box leaving you a mail.great so this is
what it it about, the main thing is the correct tnc set up after you can
send email with the radio from radio to Internet plus also text message to
your phone hi hi.
73s take care good luck putting all those underutilized tm-d700a,th-d7 and
ts 2000 to good work, their is more to aprs ans satellite with these radio
and further more you can go up on the 1.2 ghz band which receive only images
of pictures via satellite so much more we can do

Our use of APRS D7's to enter scout troop scores at our Klondike Derby this
weekend was an outstanding success. See the web page:
http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/aprsevent.html
A D700 remote contol head on a clip-board at NETCON was used to collect
scores from APRS operators with D7's at each station. This was not all
inclusive and was just a back-channel method of reporting that was added
seamlessly to the existing event. It is imporant to note that most of the
20+ ham radio volunteers that show up to support these kinds of mundane
events, show up with their 20 year old IC-2AT's with no real incentive to
do anything new.
And that is why APRS in many cases just is not used to its full potential,
because too often, the APRS aspect often tries to automate everything and
either cannot get a large enough user base to support it, or cannot field
enough equipment to make a usable comprehensive system.
In this case, however, we were an oh-by-the-way addition. We showed
netcontrol how to hit the two buttons, OK and DEL to read the message
scores as they came in on the front panel of the D700 on the scoring
clip-board. And told him to use it if it would help, otherwise we wold
make our reports verbally as well.
Turns out, the non-data-savy operators at net control were very positive
about the experience, because it removed the stress of having to be
responsive to voice traffic on call, whereas they could view the APRS
scores at any time at their convenience. In fact, they could turn the D700
front panel over to a non-licensed volunteer to take the data. THus
conserving ham voice operators for other tasks.
Anyway, APRS is not just vehicle tracking. It is a great data entry system
too.
It would be trivial to add the APRS data directly into the scoring computer
for the event, but again, the volunteers that have been doing this even for
dozens of years have been happy with the way it has always been done. It's
the typical "we don't need APRS" response... So, our low-key add-on
approach was not a threat and yet, turned out to make a few converts along
the way.
Enjoy,
Bob, WB4APR

This is ridiculous. It should have stopped long ago. I did not want to add
to this clutter, but feel I must state my opinion at this point. All caps
is not SHOUTING to all of us. Communications typewriters had only one case
that is now called caps. Teletype had three rows of keys and a shift key
for letters or figures. There was no upper/lower distinction in morse code,
teletype, semaphore, railroad highball, or other forms of messaging. There
were some abbreviations used to prevent confusion, one being PAREN to
indicate parentheses. I never saw CAPS used.
PAREN one author, mr. e. e. cummings, wrote everything in only one paren
lower paren case including his name PAREN
so what is the big deal?
