Your welcome. I currently use MURS for Ministry and personal use. Not many
people use it in this area so it make for somewhat "private" communication.
If you have any more questions you can email me off list at

That's a very diplomatic answer - hi! So, does that mean that there will
eventually be three symbols for scouts, and at least two symbols for
balloons per the recent discussions on this list, but there isn't room for
a skier icon??? By your argument, the regular "truck" symbol would have
been just fine for farm vehicles such as tractors, but there were already
separate symbols for RVs, 18 wheelers, vans, SUVs and "little red cars" as
well, and don't forget snowmobiles that have their very own symbol. You
can't have it both ways. Either there is no room for more symbols, or there
is enough flexibility to allow for changes such as additions or even
changes to drop little-used symbols and change the corresponding characters
over to something that will be used more often?

What about a third symbol set? Are primary / and secondary \ cast in stone,
or can more symbol sets be added? Why not add two more symbol sets? That
would get us up to 376 symbols. If others were added, how would that affect
legacy devices like the D7, D700 etc.? Would they be capable of just
displaying "unknown symbol" or whatever, or would they become obsolete?

Also, and more importantly, who gets to decide on issues like this? As near
as I can tell, there isn't an "APRS Working Group" anymore. Is APRS going
to be absolutely static within the current confines, or will it be allowed
to progress and grow as newer and less confining hardware and software is
developed? I think it's great that APRS can do what it already does, but if
there can't be any improvements, it might just reach a critical mass and
then collapse. If that happens, I hope I'm not around to see it. I'm really
excited about APRS and think that it should be integrated into more facets
of amateur radio instead of being seen as a separate entity.

Speaking of scoring.

I was playing around a while back for a car rally we did.

A guy here wrote a nice application using the connected state TNC.

I came up with the idea of using the connectionless mode TNC.

What I did was format a string with a unique pattern, which a head station
listens for and then puts scores into a MySQL table. (LINUX and a TNC and
PERL)

The beauty of the system is the field just squaks the scores, and the HQ
has an auto refresh web page showing the scores etc. (APACHE and PHP)

All the HQ has to do is query the database or chase up other issues.

I still want to progress it to the point where the field can query the
database. (ie, can you please tell me what I sent you...)

Duplicates are fine by the way - the database takes the last heard as the
most recent, and duplicates get ignored.

Cheers

Yess, that is the right way to do it for sure. And I welcome such
ingenuity.

The reason I posted this example was because in thi scase, I was an
outsider volunteer and couldn't come in and change the way the hams that
have been doing this for years have always done it. And since they had
their own data base and their own methods and since 90% of operators
wouldn't have APRS, in this case, we just show up with our HT's and the
D700 clipboard and they can either use the data or not. Low risk.

Thanks for the feedback

Subject: [aprssig] Franson GPSgate Software Now Offering APRS/Findu-like
Service

In the past, I have posted about Franson Software's GPSgate software. This
useful $15 shareware Windows utility splits a serial data stream from a
physical serial port into multiple virtual serial ports. This allows more
than one program can use a GPS at the same time. For example, you can run
UI-View, MapPoint and Topo from the same GPS simultaneously.

Over time, the original GPSgate has added modes of input and output. The
current versions can translate proprietary Garmin USB format into generic
NMEA on virtual serial ports. It can redirect GPS data to or from TCP/IP so
that a GPS receiver can be shared over a LAN. It can redirect GPS data into
a log file in addition to routing it to a virtual serial port for later
playback as a GPS simulator.

Version 2.5 was released today (Thursday 11 Jan 07) and has added yet
another feature. It can connect to a new website created by Franson <
http://gpsgate.com > and upload your GPS readings to a previously-created
free account. In turn, previously-authorized other users of the site
placed on your buddy list can then view your position on Google Maps ala
Findu. Since it forwards standard NMEA strings to it's website,
presumably, one could use raw NMEA data received from a TNC, stripped of
any packet headers also.

If you have a GPS-equipped PDA or laptop capable of running Windows, and
capable of connecting to the Internet, you can have a findu-like service
without a radio and without a ham license. Note that unlike some of the
findu-like GPS tracking services now being offfered by cellular carriers
and others, Franson's service is free.

Versions of GPSgate software that will work with this service are available
for both standard "full-size" Windows and for WindowsCE (the version that
works on PocketPCs).
