Doesn't XP have a boot menu - hit F8 after the BIOS finishes its thing,
before

Winderz says it's loading?

From there you select to boot to DOS prompt.

I believe you can have the boot menu shown automatically

Every time the machine boots, but that may require a registry key edit.

There's one that shows up here in the L.A. about half the time.

I've used it for operations and demonstrations in public places as an
alternative to the camp/tent symbol.

We use it here in L.A. as an object to mark the monthly meeting of a radio
club that meets in the back room of an International House of Pancakes
restaurant. Usually it appears about 48 hours before the monthly meeting.

Agreed. I use it anytime i am on foot with my TH-D7 and ForeTrex 201.

Not to mention that before Findu adopted my updated symbol sets, my mobile
SSTV LiveCAM used to show up on findu as a thunderstorm moving down the
Interstate instead of the TV symbol.

Get a bootable floppy with dos. Insert in :A drive. Re-Boot.
OH.. that's assuming that you have an :A drive.

There's a command shell, but keep in mind that it's not DOS. Windows
hasn't had DOS under the hood in a long time, and the NT/2000/XP operating
systems are vastly different inside, closer to something like VMS (to which
it's at least distantly related) than any single-user, real-mode OS. They
at least make an attempt at DOS compatibility, but you have to remember
that there are many layers of abstraction between the DOS environment and
the hardware now. DOS programs used to have direct access to pretty much
everything in the machine, but that's not possible in a modern OS.

That said, for all I know APRSdos might work just fine in XP. If not, just
load yourself up a virtual PC with VMware. You might need to download
FreeDOS to run on it if you don't have your DOS disks handy. It took more
than a decade, but they finally made it to version 1.0. Anyone know if it
works with APRSdos?

An acquaintance asked if there was decent APRS coverage along the coast of
California, say out to 10-20 mi from the shoreline. The transmitter would
be pretty close to sea level (on a kayak, for instance). 30m HF is an
option, but there was some uncertainty about what sort of antenna would be
possible for that.

The alternatives are conventional satellite tracking (Argos, Orbcomm,
Inmarsat D+)

Microsoft stopped DOS with Win 98. Bill Gates said DOS is dead... Guess he
forgot ping, tracert, ipconfig....

One way would be to partition the hard drive, install DOS on the partition.
To boot into that drive, you can use a Win98 start up disk.

Another way would be to use a removable hard drive frame. Put XP on one
drive and DOS on another. Boot into the OS you need using the drive you
install.

Separate symbols to distinguish between manned and unmanned balloons would
be nice. How about a radiation trefoil? Might be good for radiation
counters and such.

Unless you have multiple disk partitions on the machine, you won't since
the default configuration for XP is to use the NTFS disk file system rather
than the classic FAT disk system. Even if you boot DOS from a floppy or a
CD-ROM (which I do frequently), the hard disk will be invisible since DOS
doesn't understand NTFS.

NTFS-formatted disks are only readable by WinNT, Win2K (which is really
WinNT 5.0), WinXP (which is really WinNT 5.1) and the forthcoming Vista
(which is really WinNT 6.0). These disks are unreadable to DOS and Win3.x
through WinME.

You could create a separate FAT-formatted partition on the hard disk that
would be visible to DOS.
