Subject: [aprssig] Help with Interfacing a GPS to Kantronics KPC-3

Greetings to all.

This is my first post to the SIG.

I am experiencing problems interfacing my Magellan GPS Tracker to the
Kantronics KPC-3. KPC-3 settings are as follows:

GPSHEAD
1 $GPGGA
2 $GPRMC

LTP
1 GPS VIA DIGI
2 GPS VIA DIGI
3 GPS
4 GPS

BLT
1 EVERY 00:00:10
2 EVERY 00:00:20
3 EVERY 00:00:00
4 EVERY 00:00:00

LTRACK 1 LT1 LT2

ABAUD 4800

I set INTERFACE to GPS, power off KPC-3, connect GPS to DB-25 connector,
power up GPS and then power up KPC-3. Using the above configuration, the
KPC-3 should Xmit the $GPGGA GPS string every 10 seconds and the $GPRMC GPS
string every 20 seconds.

The Xmit LED does not illuminate so I assume that the KPC-3 is not
recieving the strings correctly or transmiting.

I can connect my GPS to my laptop serial port and receive NEMA183 data.
I can view the $GPGGA and $GPRMC strings, along with several other
$GPxxx strings.
These strings are updated every second, therefore I know my GPS is
transmitting data.

The following is captured GPS data from my Magellan Tracker:
$GPGLL,3449.9685,N,12026.9276,W,202153.531,A*23
$GPGGA,202153.53,3449.9685,N,12026.9276,W,1,04,2.0,00032,M,,,,*30

V*00

I then tried send this text file from the laptop to the KPC-3 while in GPS
mode. Still, no Xmit LED or data from the KPC-3. The KPC-3 should be
parsing the $GPGGA and $GPRMC strings and transmitting them.

Please review my configuration and offer any suggestions.

Thanks,

Please consider setting your TNC for PROPORTIONAL PATHING as shown on this
web page. It significantly reduces QRM to surrounding areas while still
giving you frequent updates locally:

http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/aprs/P-Pathing-kpc3.txt

It gives a local packet every minute,
a 1 hop packet 2 of every 3 minutes
a 2 hop packet 1 of every 6 minutes
a 3 hop packet 1 of every 12 minutes

etc.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the reply. I have yet to hook a transmitter up to the KPC-3.
So 'On the Air' testing has not been tried yet.
I am trying to get the basics working first, then I'll interface the KPC-3
to my transceiver. What I wanted to see was the Xmit LED illuminate every
10 and 20 seconds to demonstrate that my system is working.

I would suggest you connect the TNC to a computer and see if you can read
the strings from it. If not, then you know the data isn't getting to the
TNC and there is something else going on. If the TNC doesn't have the
strings in it, try putting a null modem between the GPS and TNC and see if
that fixes it.

The transmitting of raw NMEA strings over the air in routine APRS beacons
is highly discouraged in California. Raw NMEA strings occupy up to TEN
times more air time than the most compact encoding format for APRS
(Mic-E); a luxury we can ill-afford on the overloaded 144.39 frequency in
most of California. Real-time off-the-air channel loading data for
southern Cal is here:

If you want to run a transmit-only "dumb tracker" consider using a
TinyTrack < http://byonics.com > or Opentracker <
http://n1vg.net/opentracker > instead. Both these approx $35 kits
transmit far shorter strings than an ordinary TNC in tracker mode and
are smaller, lighter and consume less power than a full TNC. Not to
mention saving an expensive $200+ TNC for more elaborate
transmit/receive applications at a home station.
