I still need to iron the devil out of a few details, but I have a design
for an integrated GPS/TinyTrak unit that fits in a box about 4" x2"x1". The
only connections on the box are GPS antenna, 12VDC (PowerPole or coax), and
Radio Out. It's about the size of a NiMH battery pack.

So, it's not *quite* an integrated unit, but it's about as close as we'll
get for awhile, I think.

That's very cool. I actually got into ham radio because of peteK's 70cm
Rocket RDF project. Of course, I found out a few months later that RDF
isn't nearly as necessary on a drylake bed as it is in a Kansas hayfield. I
don't know if I would trust my modeling abilities with a $300 gadget,
though.

>Everything operates off an integrated 3.2V li-poly battery.

Is there any worry about the LiPo exploding? Of course, at this small
discharge and charge rate, it might not be an issue.

In the R/C helicopter world, you have LiPo safety drilled into at every
turn because it's such an evolving technology and they're so sensitive to
charge rates. Heck, the guy at the hobby shop made sure I knew how and
where to charge the batteries in my BladeCX before he'd let me leave with
it, even with the relatively (in the heli world) small 700mAH packs that I
bought. However, there was no such "death and danger" warning with the
PiccoZ $30 toy helicopter that I bought. (Coolest indoor flying toy EVER,
btw.)

I've been curious about using LiPos in smaller applications like ham
radio.

I would like to thank all of the people that helped by giving advise. Here
is an update to the issue.

I am running UI-View 32 V2.03 and I get no activity, (blinking lights or
packets in the Monitor) in KISS mode.
The only light that blinks is the DCD light, goes off when the squelch is
broken.

My port settings are as follows,
Baud: 1200, also tried 9600
Data Bits: 7
Parity: Even
Stop Bits 1

I now receive mostly characters on the power cycles, but no other
communication. The characters are not always the same.

The Key sequence, [<Alt> 192, Q, <Alt> 192] produces nothing in hyper-term
in any variant, (all one line, each sequence separate, or without spaces
and commas).

Don;t know if this helps or not, but the serial number for the TNC is
27446. There are also labels, handwritten, on some of the e-proms, they are
as follows:

State 1.09
WA4FLR-8 FAY
TheNet 2.11 st

My BOATUS magazine has an article about Anderson power poles causing a
fire aboard a boat. The company states in the article these are not to
be used in wet areas.

FRS has them. GMRS has them. My cell phone has a GPS. Uniden makes a
marine VHF with a built-in mapping GPS and DSC position polling.
Now cell phone companies are even offering tracking services and "find
your friend" services.
Only we hams are sh##-out-of-luck here :(

power poles can not cause a fire.
something else has to be involved.
Looks like improper installation of some thing else.
Mine get wet all the time on my motorcycle.

Take UI-View right out of the equation. Get your TNC going with a terminal
program first so you can determine the settings. If you can't talk to it
with a terminal program, it won't get any better or any easier in UI-View.
It would be a tedious procedure to go through and try every baud rate that
the terminal program was capable of in combination of 7 or 8 data bits,
odd or even parity, and varying stop bits. Do you have the documentation
for the TNC? If not, is there anyone on-list that can tell you how to do a
full reset to the TNC-200 and what the default settings are? Without
knowing what the current settings are, or what the default settings are
after a reset, you might have to resort trying many combinations until you
come up with the right settings.

If it's "stuck" in KISS mode, try alt-192, alt-255, alt-192. Try also alt
0192, alt 0255, alt 0192. I hadn't heard of "Q" before. Maybe it's a
"Paccom" thing? For a Kantronics TNC, the sequence would be to hold down
the ALT key, type in 192 (or 0192) and release the ALT key, and then
repeat it for 255 (or 0255) and then again for 192 (or 0192).

The following page may or may not be useful - after you get the serial
port settings correct. Strangely, I couldn't see a parameter there for
setting the "baud" rate on the serial port. Of course, you would have to
be set at the right settings to adjust it.

TNC-200 Assistance
Rich,

You must replace the TheNet EPROM with a TAPR EPROM, a Paccomm EPROM, or a
KISS (JKISS) EPROM. The Paccomm EPROM v5.0 is still available from Pac-Comm
at http://paccomm.com/

The KISS EPROM would work best if you plan to use the TNC with any of the
APRS software programs.

TheNet is not going to work with many of the APRS software programs.
