Having lived off grid for 18 years... "Most on-grid systems will shut down"
- WRONG... EVERY grid tied system MUST shutdown if the grid loses power or
else you don't get to tie to the grid. The reason is quite simple... if you
don't, you run a good chance of blowing a lineman off a pole somewhere
trying to fix whyever the grid went down. The authorities and the courts
would have no sense of humor on that matter.

Now there is whole movement of "guerilla solar" of guys doing surreptitious
grid-ties and I have felt for years that this was stupid and just a
disaster waiting to happen.

Personally, I have no interest in tying to the grid. I would have to shell
out $15K to get the power lines up here and then a couple of K$ for the
grid-tie interface. I would sooner spend a couple of hundred for an
electric hot water heater and a 24 vdc replacement heating element and rig
it as a hot water "pre-heater" to dump my extra power in the summer months
when I always have a surplus.

You all are *still* over complicating this.
I used to be in the marine electrical/electronics business and most
boats over 30 feet are plugged into shore power 24/7/365 when not
underway and have various DC loads running. They do not ruin their very
expensive battery banks if they have halfway decent chargers. The "smart
charger" is not fooled by loads to an extent that will boil the
batteries. Some chargers even have temperature sensors that attach to
the batteries. Here is just one example -
http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|328|51495|985|316473&id=94183.
These chargers can be left on permanently with no problem. If you are
really hardcore, get some batteries like these babies:

Subject: [aprssig] GPS recommendations

I'll probably start trolling eBay for a used GPS sometime after Christmas,
hoping Garmin's ad campaign was effective and people will be getting rid of
their older models. I'm looking for a GPS to replace the III+ that I
currently have. I'm looking for a color model with a reasonable-sized
display, hopefully upgradeable maps, and it must have a bidirectional RS-232
serial connection so I can hook it up to a future TinyTrak4 or OpenTracker2
(or my D7) and display other APRS stations on it.

Any recommendations on models to get (or avoid)?

I can strongly recommend the Garmin 60Cx and/or 60CSx. I use it for SAR,
road navigation, overseas navigation and APRS. It is a wee bit expensive
though. Now the 60C or 60CS (no x) are no longer made/sold by Garmin and
you may find good deals for these models on eBay. While it does have USB
capability for mapping etc. it does have the old round serial plug, like
the III+ (so if you go for one of those, don't get rid of your old cables).
Now the 60 C or 60CS do not have upgradeable memory. They have about 60
megs which gave me all of NYS roads and topos (minus NYC and Long Island).
Now you could also look into the 76C or 76CS. They are equivalent to the
60C/CS models but have a larger memory(over 100 megs) and they do float.
The buttons are set differently and I found it not as comfortable to hold
in my hand as well as work the buttons. But your opinion may differ.

While the newer eTrex Cx models may appeal to you, I believe they are
USB only models, not like the original eTrex series.

Does anybody know when and where the 2007 TAPR DCC conference will be? I
don't need specifics, just the town and dates would be nice.

Thanks in Advance

I think I heard that it's going to be back East, but that's all I know.
I'm still waiting for the website to be updated with the stuff from 2005.

Typically, the DCC is held around the third weekend of September.
