Perhaps you don't have enough audio from the TNC to modulate the transmitter
Try adjusting the audio level

John,

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad some folks are smarter than me. I guess I
have to show my ignorance. How would I go about doing this?

Keith,
Thanks for your reply. You are correct - about not hearing any tones. I
am not trying to digipeat. (At this point I don't know how to do that
anyway). I'm just listening on another 2 meter radio and I don't hear any
tones when I send packets.
Also, I have a friend on APRS just a few miles away who has been sending
me packets and I receive messages fine. But - he does not get my reply.

Hey Chris, we all learn from each other, no one knows everything.
the first thing is to look in the manual ( maybe you can download it
from MFJ)
I'm not familiar with the MFJ unit.
On the KAM that I use there are jumpers inside that produce several
different levels of audio to match just about any radio
I would guess the MFJ has the same or maybe an adjustable pot
If you dont have any test equipment adjust the level until it sounds
about the same as the incoming stations
Good luck

It sounds like either the level out of the MFJ 1278 is too low or there is a
cabling problem between the TNC and the radio. I went to MFJs site, but
couldn't find a manual for it. Have you got one there? Some TNCs have a pot
or jumper inside for adjusting the level, and others do it through a command
from the keyboard.

At least it's working in the receive direction. That's half the battle!

I couldn't find a manual for the MFJ 1278, but I looked at the manual for
a 1270C/1274C and it indicated that the CALIBRA command was used
to get it to transmit the tones while you calibrate the output levels. Hit K
for transmit, hit the space bar to get the higher tone, and when you are
finished, Q to quit. The instructions for that TNC indicated that there
was a pot for adjusting the level. Would your 1278 be similar?

Is anyone using the ICOM 703 & SCS PTC-IIex controller for HF APRS?
Wanting to know the best interface method for the controller, via the data
socket OR, the mic socket? Was looking to use the mic gain etc. to set the
transmit level. Also, what is the most common mode for HF APRS? Any other
clues I should know?

Keith,
Again, thanks for the reply. Yes - I have a manual. I worked on the tnc
yesterday checking the software connection. However, I had to visit with
family so I was not able to finish.
I turned the audio WAY UP on the other 2 meter rig - when I tried sending
a packet and I was able to hear a very faint burst of the packet. So, you
may be right about the audio level being way down. I will check it out later
today. Thanks for the help. I will let you know what I find out.
73 for now
Chris
