I recently did a presentation to our local club about the history and
current status of packet radio. I brought up the seemingly constant
criticism that we are 'still communicating at 1200 baud" a said to them, in
essence, what AJ said here below. Just about any ham 2/440 talkie can be
rigged to pass data (maybe not perfectly tuned, but still very workable).
Almost every ham has a computer and a vhf/uhf rig using the sound card
software they can get a digital station on the air for almost no additional
expense except an interface cable the price of which is trivial by
comparison.

Specifically in APRS, the hardware aspect aside, at the higher speeds being
talked about the TxD will take far more time than the short APRS data
payload offsetting most of the speed gain.

IMHO APRS will eventually meet the same fate as 2 meter repeaters and
autopatch. There was a time when phone calls made up a large amount of
repeater traffic. Right now I would guess repeater traffic of ANY kind is
about 90% off of what we had in the Balt-DC area in the mid 1980s. Already
I can pay an extra fee and Verizon will let me use the GPS embedded in my
phones to do APRS like tracking.

See http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/splash/chaperone/index.jsp. The main
uses of APRS will then be applications where a cell phone just won't work
(aircraft, balloons, middle of nowhere) and as an emergency fallback. For
some reason we have also been crippled by outdated hardware. A mapping
GPS/Radio/TNC combo is available to marine, FRS, and GMRS users but not to
hams. Perhaps no manufacturers see APRS lasting long enough to be worth
investing in?

Eep! The argentdata.com server's uplink is pegged at 10 mbps - can't say
yet how much of that is APRSTV and how much is the APRS test CD image, but
the combination of the two being released on the same morning is certainly
giving the server a workout. Have patience if it's running a bit slow -
it's still moving, and I suspect the load will start to lighten later in the
day.

Joe,

How hard would it be to modify a marine radio to APRS?

About impossible for most of them. Very few can be set to run on anything
but marine VHF channels and both DSC and AIS protocols are significantly
different than APRS. There are a few Icom marine radios that can do 2
meters, but they have no GPS or data capability.
