We've added a few more Tier 2 servers to our network. The latest addition
is missouri.aprs2.net in Columbia, MO. There are now 35 Tier 2 APRS servers
world-wide. The recommended port is 14580 where you can define your custom
filter needs. Download the 'How to':
http://f5vag.eu/php/file_download_filter_txt.php
To view the Tier 2 server list:

Option for Ui-View32 users:
To download the list just insert the following in the Ui-View's 'DOWNLOAD
APRS Server List' text box. Afterwards check-box the servers you plan to
use:
serverlist.aprswest.com
or

In order to try to get people with similar interests collected together in
one place, we now have the "SAR_APRS" yahoo group.
We intend to keep the focus on emergency groups only. "Normal" and
public-service APRS operations already have many excellent forums to
discuss such things.
Discussions about the use of APRS in SAR and similar organizations ends up
getting spread across many mailing lists, making it difficult to collect a
critical mass in one place.
If you have an interest in using APRS for SAR and/or other emergency
groups, please subscribe to this list:

How about repeater parts like HI PRO. I think the manufacturer is Maggiore
and they sold transmitters and receivers for people that want to roll their
own. They may fit the bill. They may cost the same as buying a good HT
though.

Seems that serial barcode scanners are out of fashion these days. A cheap
USB keyboard wedge type cost me about $50 on eBay, with shipping - has a max
scan distance of about an inch, and a scan width not QUITE wide enough to
scan an express mail tracking number.
A very nice Symbol handheld serial laser scanner cost me under $20 with
shipping. It works at a distance of about a foot, scans VERY wide barcodes,
and is much sturdier than the cheap USB model.
Anyway, I hooked it up to a Tracker2 and started seeing what I could do with
it. There may be a way to configure the scanner (I haven't even looked up
the manual yet), but as-is it doesn't send a carriage return at the end of a
scan. So I tweaked the Tracker2 command console code a bit, and now it'll
accept commands bracketed in /* */.
So what does this mean? Well, for starters, you can print out lists of
configuration commands and use the scanner to set up the tracker. This
might be useful for events where you've got a bunch of them to configure -
you can have a sheet printed out for each unit to be configured. Or just
print the unique stuff (timeslot assignments, callsigns) and have a page of
common configuration options. Since it waits for a terminating */ sequence,
a single command could be composed of multiple barcode segments. For
example, you could scan /*INTERVAL and then 30*/, 60*/, or 120*/.
Since the T2 does messaging from the command line, you could use it to send
canned messages to any of a list of recipients, including email addresses.
Once I get some object creation code written, you ought to be able to use it
to scan a race participant, for example, and have the tracker send an object
identifying that participant at the current GPS position.
Or you could do the reverse, and use the POSITION command to set the unit's
fixed position, and wander around with a tracker and barcode scanner,
scanning your current location instead of using a GPS receiver. Seems like
that'd have limited applications, though.
I'm just throwing this out there to see if it'd be useful to anyone, and to
see if anyone else has any ideas for killer applications for it. If you
think of anything interesting, let me know.

I think this has possibilities. We used to do checkpoints for a canoe race,
this would work nice for that if the scan distance was good. This would work
great for in building applications for search and rescue or ham fest
applications. Just stick the bar code on the door or room entrance. Seems
like this would be a natural extension of Bob's vicinity tracking. Would
certainly be easier than setting up a bunch of deaf radios. This might also
be good to improve the position accuracy problem in places like ham fests.
It will be good to hear what other ideas people think of.
Thank You,

Scott,
Yet another great idea. This would be extremely useful for a remote real
time data acquisition network for an inventory, disaster area(s), canoe
races, search and rescue exercises, or any object you wanted to bar code
and track. It leads me to think about what FedEx and all of the large
parcel companies use for some of their very remote deliveries. I'm not
exactly sure how they report data back to the rest of the world from the
truck, cellular modem? The trademark definitely hampers the commercial
applications.
The more I think about this idea, how helpful would this have been for
Katrina/9-11? You could have gone around and tagged a house, building,
person, whatever object and had it all report back to a central location
with whatever information.
I remember a distribution of Linux that was modeled for the use of disaster
information organization and interfaced with Google's mapping program. I
can imagine that they would be very interested in this.
You could even implement this idea with RFID.

WHile I am impressed witht he barcode idea and am sure it has many
applications, I wonder if there is a $20 keypad availble too.
With a digital keypad, then it would be easier to enter runner numbers and
numbers for things one cannot reach-out and scan.
We have had an application for reporting scout roop patrols and scores and
station numbers. I have wanted to use APRS-DTMF for that so that any HT
can be used as a data entry device, but so far, no one has come up with the
APS-dtmf program other than my DOS version that needs a $3 external DTMF
chip... I'm hoping someone will do it on a sound card so here is no
hardware needed.
