Garmin GPS18. The PC version has a 12V cig lighter plug on it. It has a 5V
regulator built into the cig lighter plug. The LVC version is bare wires
and you provide the 5V regulator to power it. Obviously, avoid the USB
version that puts out Garmin mode only.

I have a Deluo GPS receiver as well, but it puts out a racket on the
repeater frequency that I usually listen on.

Garmin GPS18PC if you need cigarette lighter plug for 12V power.
Garmin GPS18LVC if you are going to connect it to a device like a TinyTrak
or OpenTracker that supplies 5V. Avoid the GPS18USB unless you are going
to use it with a laptop computer.

The GPS18PC defaults to 4800 baud NMEA. You can download software for free
from Garmin that can change that.

GPS18PC Deluxe includes mapping software, but costs about twice as much as
the OEM version.

GPS18PC OEM should cost about $80 if purchased online, plus shipping.

The GPS-18 works very well, and TAPR carries them. Note that the very
latest firmware supports a Garmin program, both downloadable from the Garmin
web site, which takes the output from the USB version and creates a virtual
serial port with NMEA output. I haven't tried it myself, but I have seen a
couple of reports that it works with UI-View32. FWIW

If Joel will be connecting it to a laptop in his truck, then the GPS18 USB
with the Garmin software would do the job. No matter what, I couldn't get it
installed on one laptop, but successfully installed it with another and it
did what it was supposed to do. If Joel wants to connect it up to something
like a TT3 or OT, the USB version would be out though.

Ah man... Does that mean I have to go back to all of my clients and unblock
MySpace access???

But, I can't deny that My(Pedo)Space is a great place to find the
youngsters... I guess...

1090 Mhz is the frequency used by IFF systems (now the politically correct
secondary radar systems) for the response from an aircraft to an
interrogation from the ground. The basic IFF mode A (W.W.II era) the
respose is a one microsecond pulse. Other modes use pulse codes to report
altitude, aircraft ID and, in the case of a military aircraft combat mode
and encrypted response to an encrypted interrogation. ADB-S is an
evolution of the IFF system.

Pulse modulation can be used on UHF and higher amateur bands. However,
this will vary by administration and I have no idea what the Australian
administration allows. I don't even know what the the USA administration
(FCC) allows, but I do know where to look it up.

Sure, data transmission by pulse modulation is possible. However, when the
FCC in the USA changed the power limits from 1 kW average input power to
1.5 kW PEP output, pulse modulation at low duty cycle became unattractive.
Oh well, so much for my ham radar.

Garmin GPS-18 PC is super with suction cups mount on window. Use for APRS
in two vehicles with D700.

Subject: [aprssig] Findu maps and sat'view

Hi All...

Just me (probably) but is there something odd at the moment about the way
the FindU server shows locations on it's google map/earth display?

It seems that the posit is now in the top left corner, not the center of
the "screen", resulting in some very strange behaviour.

Just an observation, tried two indipendant computers (XP and 2000)
different IP's ISP's etc and so on... Same strange bahaviour.
