As long as the accessory connector provides some kind of feedback indication
that it's in use, I can have it skip the timeslot. The application involves
having potentially a couple hundred users on one channel, so enforcing
proper timing is going to be important. Might need to leave a couple of
timeslots open every minute for emergency beacons and such.

Has anyone written a procedure for starting from scratch and installing and
configuring UI-VIEW and AGWPE ?
I have had a few people wanting help but have not ever written anything
down.

Setup and use of AGW is covered at length at:
http://www.patmedia.net/ralphmilnes/soundcardpacket/
Don't even think about UIview until you have AGW working. The companion
AGW Monitor utility is useful for verifying that AGW is actually receiving
and decoding packets. AGW Monitor is a totally mindless "run the setup
program" type of install with no configuration at all. It automatically
links to AGW and displays anything that AGW decodes.
Once you have AGW working properly, then install UIview normally. In
"Setup, Comms Setup", select AGW in the "Host Mode" pulldown. UIview
should then automatically work with AGW. You don't even need to fiddle
with COM ports, baud rate, number of data bits, handshaking, KISS
initialization commands, etc.
If you want one-click startup, an option in the AGW configuration allows
it to start other programs. Enter the path to the UIview executable
here. Starting AGW than then automatically launch UIview as well.
[I use AGW this way to start a copy of UIview, whose UI-Scheduler then
starts three other instances of UIview (installed in three other folders
on the same machine) and logs three of them into Internet servers. In
turn, a link to AGW is in the Startup folder of my Windows Start Menu so
that my APRS server system can recover automatically after a power
failure or accidental reboot.]

But if you simply gave up the old RELAY (like North Americans have) you
could as easily travel to other continents too. Then it's easier and no
problem (and fewer dupe packets possibly colliding and reducing throughput).
Some in Europe have already given up the RELAY (and TRACEn-N).

| Actually Andy has an EXCELLENT point. The Europeans
| don't have to really do anything, leave their network
| alone. It supports TRACEn-N and WIDEn-N. But they
| should encourage everyone to use TRACEn-N since it is
| traceable and WIDEn-N is not (over there).
|
| Then they can also phase out RELAY since WIDE1-1 also
| works there....

Well fine, but then it wouldn't hurt to _start_ making WIDEn-N traceable
too, and going forward encourage users to use WIDEn-N. And that way
eventually (painlessly) phase out TRACEn-N and RELAY as in North America and
some other places). Seems headed that way already.

Anyone know of a relatively inexpensive FM deviation meter? If not, how
does one go about setting the audio level into the transmitter to have
an appropriate output level?
Thanks in advance.

I picked up one from MFJ. It works, but the tuning is a bit fiddly.
By ear method: Turn level up and transmit (into a dummy load, of course)
and then start turning the level down until it sounds noticeably quieter and
less distorted. Turn it down some more. That should get you in the ballpark.

At one time, TAPR had a neat little unit which interfaced with a RS scanner.
I have used it through 9600 baud, and it compares well with much more
expensive laboratory equipment. No longer available, but you might find one
here, or on eBay. As someone else mentioned, MFJ does make one which works,
mostly. Also, Heathkit made an excellent one which I have seen at hamfests.
You might mention what radio you are using. Perhaps someone here has the
same one, and can give you the measured drive voltage.
