I personaly don't like the idea that it only works in windows and ignores
OSX and linux/unix/bsd/whatever.

The Airmail application works fine in Wine.. Telpac_node is available for
Linux and works great. They've chose to build the infrastructure on
Winders and since it's behind a wall from us end users - it doesn't matter
to us. There's lots we can do with Linux, etc, to take advantage of
their infrastructure and efforts so on we go. It's cricital we do this
so the world (and ARRL/ARES/NTS) sees there's far more to Amateur Digital
messaging then just Winlink2k.

There are 2 versions yellow eTrex, the original for the US (also sold in
europe in the beginning since I have one) and one multi-language version
for Europe.
The first has older hardware "Bravo 6" (press "page" and "up" and switch it
on while keeping the buttons pressed). That one has less memory and Garmin
stopped updates at version 2.14.
The newer one had newer hardware (you guessed it...) and more memory,
allowing for more features. One of them is NMEA-input, but also some
fishing stuff. This software is available at Garmins site as "eTrex-euro".
I have a strong suspicion that the hardware and software is 100% identical
to the "eTrex camo".
There is no way to run eTrex-euro/eTrex camo software on the Bravo 6
hardware, not compatible and not enough memory.
Beware also when you update the eTrex software, the newer software outputs
positions with more digits, the older TH-D7's could not cope with that.
Downgrade is possible, but you need the software...
I asked garmin (a few years ago) for NMEA-in for the Bravo 6 eTrex, the
reply was:

Hi Henk,
Sorry, the standard eTrex does not have sufficient code space to have
these features added - although our engineers are working on it and may
find some way of doing this in the future.
Comments about the track lines have been noted by our engineers, but I do
not know if they intend to change this setting.
The NMEA input was part of the update for the eTrex European.

Hello Garmin,
3 quick questions, not found in the FAQ:
1) On the update page I see the european model, sw 2.05 has
the following feature:
"Added Hunt / Fish outlook page and Sun / Moon outlook page"
Will this be added to the US version too? (my unit has the US
version). If not, is there any way to convery my US version
(eTrex - Bravo 6) to a european version?
2) Will there be a version with 1 pixel-thick track lines?
3) If the eTrex could accept $GPWPL input when NMEA is used whould
be realy great!
I hope you can answer my questions,
Kind regards,
Henk.
P.S. I think the eTrex is fantastic, I use it with APRS on HAM-radio.
It works great (but you already knew this I guess...).

WinLink itself has nothing to do with "only runs under Windows". You can
talk to a TNC or SCS Pactor modem using only a dumb terminal, and
communications program that can pass ASCII commands out the serial port.
So these are commonly available in all operating systems. Unfortunately
few bother to learn how to use their TNC's in terminal mode. During the
early days, this is all we had, there were no fancy front end programs.
When Procomm was released, that was the cat's meow but is was still only a
manual command line interface from the users standpoint talking to the TNC.
Yes, Airmail is a native Winderz app, but as has been pointed out if you
can get Wine to work you can run Airmail under emulation in Linux. Airmail
is absolutely NOT a necessary interface to WinLink. It's simply another
widget intended to present non-technical people a familiar interface to
make them more comfortable using the system, and reduce training and set-up
time, especially in places like an EOC where you might have dozens of
non-Hams from many different backgrounds needing to send e-mail. By giving
them a familiar Outlook-style interface it makes the stress level go down.
If you can use a terminal program and issue command line ASCII commands you
can use Winlink on anything with a serial port, even a CP/M box or
Commodore-64, on both VHF or HF.
That's what I call backward compatibility.

Thank you Bob and Ray for shedding some light on this. I stand corrected!
My only problem with the Winlink information I'd read is that I didn't find
anything that mentioned this, only "download this Windows executable here"
or "Run this Windows program from here". Now that I know there's more to
it than that, I might have to dial up a local Telpac node and see what I
can do.

You don't "dial up" a Telpac node, you connect to it over the air via
regular old connected mode packet on 1200 baud VHF. Once connected you
will be in a simple command-line menu system like the old packet BBS's.
Those who choose to run Airmail will have simple one-click icon's to
connect, select various gateway stations, and send/receive e-mail almost as
easily as using Microsoft Outlook (or whatever program you prefer). Those
who connect "manually" and use the command line interface will have some
advanced Winlink functions disabled. Another reason to use Airmail. But
it still gets the job done.
