The oldest, cheapest Garmin eTrex unit (the yellow one, the one that's just
called "eTrex" with no extra name like "Legend" "Venture" or "Vista") is
similarly unable to accept GPWPL sentences. The other versions of the eTrex
can accept the GPWPL sentences, though.

I have one of those yellow eTrexes and it accepts waypoints via $GPWPL just
fine. If it doesn't work for you, it might be due to the software/hardware
version of the GPS or the length of the waypoint name.

Subject: [aprssig] Yaesu Memorizer FT-227R manual?
Does anyone know where a copy of the manual Yeasu Memorizer FT-227R can be
found online?
I recently acquired one, and I'm trying to set one up for APRS. My
specific questions at this point are what is the pinout for the accessory
port, and where is the memory backup battery located (assuming it has one)?
I'm assuming it should remember the frequency even when powered down.
A session with the meter and the cover off leads me to believe the
accessory port pinout is:
1 - RX audio back in to speaker/speaker jack
2 - TX audio in
3 - PTT
4 - RX audio out
5 - switched +V to power accessory
It looks like a really nice old rig, especially the power for the accessory
- I can run a single cable into the TNC for power and radio connections,
and a second RS232 cable out to the computer. I like clean installations!
I know this is a bit OT, but I'm trying to set it up for APRS use...
thanks,
Jason

Someone came up to me at the NWAPRS summer gathering yesterday and had one
of these units. There was no option on the screen for setting it to NMEA
IN/OUT mode. Just NMEA OUT.

Jason,
Try <http://mods.dk/index.php?ListManuals=yaesu> there are a number of
files available there.

Mine has the following settings for I/O format:
GARMIN
GARMIN DGPS
NMEA
TEXT OUT
RTCM IN
RTCM/NMEA
RTCM/TEXT
NONE
The NMEA setting has worked for me. On startup it says "1999-2002 Garmin
Corp. Multi-Lingual" and the software version is 2.20. Maybe there is a
"single-lingual" version as well that doesn't support NMEA input.. Also
looking at the Garmin changelog for the multi-lingual version, NMEA
waypoint input was implemented in software version 2.04.

I just did a Google search for "Yeasu FT-227R manual" and it pulled up
several sites.

In an area with one or two or three active users total - it wouldn't be
cost effective to build two separate systems when one would work just fine.
Any more users and activity would make sense to build a separate system to
carry the additional load.
It all comes down to the airtime usage.

In that small of area, they could just run on the voice repeaters, it's just
sharing bandwidth right?
