Subject: [aprssig] Delayed packets (yet again)

In one of the many "delayed packet" discussions there was talk about some
serial-to-USB converters causing issues. I can't seem to find this
discussion in the archives. Does anyone recall the make(s)/model(s) of the
serial-to-USB converters that are known or suspected of being problematic?
And perhaps suggest a model that is known to work well?

I've been communicating with an I-gate owner whose station is injecting
delayed packets into APRS-IS. He's too busy to study and fix the problem
(unfortunately for the rest of us) so I'm trying to help gather some
information that may make it easier to debug the problem. He swapped TNCs
but that didn't fix it. He mentioned that he uses a serial-to-USB
converter so hopefully I can talk him into experimenting with a different
one or coming up with another solution.

This is the one I've got, and I've had problems programming tiny tracks with
it...

I suspect the problem is that the last packet recieved isn't flushed forward
to the PC.

Is he using APRS in the SERIAL port mode rather then connected to the AX25
stack? If so, that's a clue. We're seen something similar with another
station once and that was a unique feature of their setup.

Jerome, W0JRT

Get yourself a KEYSPAN USB adapter and your problems will go away.
The Com port numbers will always be the same and the software is great!

This is the MCT (Magic Control Technology) dongle based on the Prolific
Technology USB<->Serial chip. This is the cable sold by "Purple
Computing" at:

http://www.pfranc.com

This chip and it's associated driver is notoriously fussy to configure
on many systems.

The Prolific chip is used in many USB-Serial converters and is built into
some USB-interfaced GPS devices. [All GPS devices internally are serial --
in a "USB GPS" the conversion from serial to USB takes place inside the GPS
case instead of in the middle of a cable.]

A version of this same chip and driver are used in a USB-to-two-serial-port
interface box sold by SIIG. Picture of the device here:

http://www.siig.com/product.asp?catid=120&pid=869

The manual for this device in PDF format is here:

http://www.siig.com/manual.asp?catid=120&pid=869

I have found that this version of the driver seems to be much less
problematic on many other devices also based on the Prolific chip. After I
installed the SIIG version of the driver, I was amazed to see that several
other USB-based devices including a Holux USB-interfaced GPS mouse that had
always been a flaky headace started working perfectly. You can download the
driver from SIIG's website at:

http://www.siig.com/product.asp?catid=120&pid=869

Note that this download includes a utility "DDremover.exe" that should be
run before installing, to remove any previous installations of the driver
from your system. --

You can also download a driver direct from Prolific, for both XP and OSX
(possibly also Linux, but I didn't look). I would expect that to be the
most up-to-date driver. Something to keep in mind if the Siig one doesn't
do the trick.

Subject: [aprssig] JNOS Interface question

Gudday

I have JNOS ruinning and can do some basic tcpip over radio stuff.

When i look at ifconfig in linux, i do not see the vhf interface.

Is it only available in JNOS ?

Perhaps I need to do ax25 support in LINUX instead ?

Yes, make it a kernel device and it'll be available outside of JNOS.

While USB-Serial may be an issue, I have seen the issue with an Igate using
a regular hardware (no usb) serial port. I recently watched a balloon
flight via RF and saw the delayed packet phenomenon over RF with no
internet connection. I think the problem may be digi related but I can't
prove that. I am waiting for Scott to release the OT2 so I can put one in
one of the suspect digi sites and see if there is any difference.
