HamHUD is the original SmartBeaconing device. There's a new firmware
version of HamHUD that allows it to be used with a TM-D700. There are also
other SmartBeaconing devices, like Byonics' TinyTrak and N1VG's
OpenTracker. Someone mentioned UI-VIEW32 - I think it has SmartBeaconing,
but I know APRS+SA does.

You can hook a PC to the serial port in parallel with a HamHUD.

HamHUD takes care of that. Line 1 of the display always shows speed and
heading (selectable units), and Line 2 can be configured to show lat/lon,
or distance/bearing from any heard station, or a selectable waypoint.

You mean Bob recommends transmitting voice on 144.39? I'll have to go back
and read that one...

Xastir, and the Tracker2 from N1VG also.

Dave pointed out a station sending data, and I was able to get parsing
working as of a couple hours ago. I hear three stations so far, only one
seems to be getting data to the APRS IS regularly. In a couple days, there
will be enough data to make this look better...

If anyone gets ahold of these guys, tell them they could sell a lot of tide
guages if they made them easier to buy! I'm still waiting for a callback.

Yes, he does.

Used in instances where you discover someone that you're getting direct
packets from (not from a tower) and thus are close enough to go simplex.
Break in with a "hey fellow close APRSer, go to (some voice channel) to
chat".

Cheers,
Anders

No, I don't think that's exactly what he's recommending.

Quoting from MOBILE.TXT packaged with APRS876.ZIP:

=========

VOICE ALERT! The concept called Voice Alert is like getting a FREE APRS
voice calling channel in your mobile for ALWAYS being able to contact an
APRS mobile no matter what freq his voice radio is on. Its also like a
radar detector for other mobile APRS operators in simplex range on the open
road. It is trivially simple:

Instead of turning the speaker volume down on your noisey 144.39 channel,
simply set CTCSS decode to 100 Hz. This accomplishes 2 things:

1) It keeps your speaker quiet but everyone who understands voice alert
knows they can contact you by voice by simply calling on PL 100.

2) It causes your outgoing packets to have PL 100 to serve as a radar ping
to other Voice Alert stations in range. Conversly you will never hear
anything on your 144.39 voice alert unless anotehr APRS voice alert station
is in simplex range (about 5 miles max)

These two make sure you will have an opportunity for a voice call to QSY to
52 or other channel for a QSO. On the interstates you pass another ham
statistically about once every 10 minutes. But you never know it. With
Voice Alert, you now will be aware of each other's presence AND you will
have a KNOWN contact frequency.

=========

For what it's worth, I've been running Voice Alert around Central and
Southern Indiana for the last month. I've heard one station transmitting a
100.0 Hz PL tone.

Gudday

I would like to harness the ack features of APRS messaging and put the data
into a database.

So my next question is :-

What APRS clients allow me to "get at" the messaging part ?

I would prefer LINUX - my back end will be mysql and php delivery.

I am trying to put together a HQ for a ham radio event, with the messages
being displayed on a refreshing web page (which gets its data from APRS
messages)

Ideas ? Does XASTIR let me at the message data in any way ?

We will be in the bush - so NO internet

Nope, but logging of all messaging is on our feature request list. We have
a dialog right now that shows all messaging: We could tie into that code
and log everything that goes there to disk without too much difficulty.

Of course we'd be happy to accept patches to do that and integrate them
into the main code body...
