Subject: [aprssig] APRS Windows-CE Problem
Has anyone had problems with running APRS CE on an HP Ipaq 1950 series? I
am using a Kenwood THD-7 in packet mode and have all communications set up
properly. I have got it working...sometimes. The problem seems to be when
I shut the system down and try to power up later I have to start APRS-CE
with out the RS 232 cable attached and then exit APRS (without powering down
the HP). Before running APRS-CE again I hot plug the sync cable with the RS
232 then exicute the program. If I do not follow this procedure exactly the
HP goes in a lock up condition (or runs at a snails pace). About 50% of the
time even if I do follow this procedure it still hangs and I have to do a
reboot of the HP.
When it does run properly it screams (speedy).
It almost appears when I exit APRS-CE and power the HP down it is leaving
the serial port in an odd status. Once I get it running properly I can exit
and restart APRS-CE many times as long as I don't power the HP down. Once I
power it down and power back up it very difficult to get running agin.
In checking memory with the program running I find it has several meg of
un-used space in the machine
Anyone have suggestions or seen this problem?

I also have APRSCE installed on my T-Mobile MDA in Windows Mobile 5. But
the PDA slows down to a crawl whenever I connect to a GPS or radio via
Bluetooth.
BTW, my review of the T-Mobile MDA and installed GPS software:

Subject: [aprssig] APRS geographic coordinates
I notice that some raw APRS packets include latitude and longitude, but
others do not. Is there a compressed system of geographic coordinates used
by APRS? If so, how can I translate it into one of the standard coordinate
systems?
Thanks and 73, Bruce

There are two that are currently used for APRS: One is called Mic-E
protocol, the other is called Base-91 compression. They can both be found
in the APRS Spec.
You may have seen Base-91 compressed packets from me as I'm south of you by
a bit (WE7U-12 & WE7U-3).
Many mobile stations are running Mic-E compression, for instance the TH-D7A
and TM-D700A Kenwood radios, and many of the TinyTrak's.
The easiest way to translate the coordinates would be to run a client
program that does this for you, then read the lat/long coordinates from
there. Translating them by hand is a royal pain.

Support for this program was discontinued in 2004, just so you know.
To answer your question directly though, do a search for "pcktaprs" on
Google and you'll find it.

I know that Bob has made suggestions about how to do this in the past, but
since the ARPSSIG archives aren't searchable, it's fundamentally impossible
to find such gems of knowledge.
I'd like to use an XDigi (four beacons) to advertise a voice repeater at
the same site, as well as show that it's a W11. I recall that one of the
concerns is having the text show up well on a D7 screen.
What's the right way to do this? There is both 2m and 70cm access. My first
attempt is

W1 W6WGZ/R 147.180+ info: k6dbg_at_arrl.net
441.175+ PL146.2 W1 info: k6dbg_at_arrl.net
W11 Oakhurst Fill-in info: k6dbg_at_arrl.net
W11 Oakhurst Fill-in info: k6dbg_at_arrl.net
but I don't know what sensible timing/destinations are - my inclination is
to make the first two direct, every 30 minutes, and the others W2-1 and
W2-2, as usual.
That means it takes up to an hour to learn about both repeaters, which
seems a bit much for someone driving through...

If you don't find the files you are looking for, I have a pocketaprs.prc
palm application file (270kb). I have a few local area maps (Western
Washington), but those should be much more readily available.
As Curt mentioned this is an unsupported application :) so it can not be
registered.

If your advertising a repeater, and running a wide-1 digi. I would beacon
direct only,on all your tx. Wide2-1 would be out of the repeaters and your
local wide1-1 digi's range, let alone packet load in our valley.. Just my
opinion.. Here is a link from Bob's site on wide1-1 fillin digi's..
http://eng.usna.navy.mil/~bruninga/aprs/WIDE1-1settings.txt I'm going to
drop wide2-2 from mtoso. It's beacon's goes too far...Jim kg6ows
