Did you look for other packets heard by KG4PID-15 (or both Igates) right
before that packet? Was it gating timely right up until that packet? Or
was there some inactivity? I'm wondering if you could see this kind of
result with a demand-dial internet connection.

Subject: [aprssig] Re: Laptop Stand

Jason,
I had wanted a different laptop setup for mine as well. I used the
design from http://webs.lanset.com/wa8lmf/table/index.htm and added a
little bit. Go to http://disneycrazy.smugmug.com/gallery/1681789
(laptopstand is the password for this gallery) for my pictures. I got
2 `used' weights (25lb) from a Used Sports store. I drilled holes and
mounted flat aluminum stock across the bottom in several sections to
make `feet for it. (Look closely in some of the pics. I put insulation
around the pipe and ran all my wires from the radios (mounted under the
table) down the side. The foam hides the wires. It is tie wrapped.
Between the weights I have a little bit of foam to offset the bolt
heads. This setup WILL NOT MOVE! I have gone around corners,
potholes, and it will not budge. I have the laptop tie wrapped also
across the very top of the keyboard section. As you can see-running
old tech and very little outlay (90 mhz laptop, Garmin 8 channel GPS,
KPC3 with the serial switchy thingy and running Pmaps with Pmap 6).
Best thing-no holes were drilled and someone can sit in the other front
seat if need be ;-)

Robert

At any given time I can see this type of delay. KG4PID-15 has been connected
to "third.aprs.net" core server for 05h32m51.457s, so it is not a dial on
demand system.

Are there IGates that dial on demand?

Here is a current snapshot of current data that shows the delay:

The weather packets are easy to identify as the same packet. Clearly we see
some variable delay between the same packets heard direct by two IGates.
N8DEU-4 (APRS+SA) was connected to "first.aprs.net" port 14580 using the
filter "r/34/-86/200 t/n" and KG4PID-15 (UI-View32 V2.03) was connected to
"third.aprs.net" port 14580 using the filter "m/100". Depending on the CPU
speed and the I/O connection speed the range parameter on the filter may
need to be reduced further to gain more responsive transfer to the APRS-IS.
Just a thought.

Subject: [aprssig] EVDO to 802.11g dilemma

It's been a busy week for me. Got fed up with my employer and found a
really cool new job.

I've been tasked with deploying an EVDO to 802.11g system for a municipal
GIS application. I've inherited hardware and software that I have to make
work due to certain time and budget constraints. I am stuck for now using
Windows XP Pro on an embedded computer platform. Here's the issue:

We had a small Linux router running on a Soekris board, but I've been told
to abandon it (for now) and use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on a
small Via Epia box running XP with an EVDO Card. AP and Bridging roles are
handled by Senao EOC/NOC-3220's. I <<HAVE TO>> use ICS (against my
advice, but it's what the boss wants) to feed the AP, bridges, and
computers downstream. Suprisingly, I set everything to DHCP, crossed my
fingers, held my breath, and it works.

Here's my problem. The Senao 3220's were set up using static IP's, but
since we've gone DHCP with ICS using 192.168.0.XXX IP addresses I have lost
control of the 3220's. They work, but I can't find their IP's to access
their web-based setup utilities (for WEP, etc). They have a console port,
but we need to manage them when they're up on poles. ICS has no native
DHCP lookup table, but you can dig up the Hosts.ICS file and look at the IP
leases. The odd thing is that all computers on the network show up there,
but the AP and Bridge do not. I tried Angry IP Scanner on both networks
and obvious ports, but again the Senao 3220's show up nowhere. I even
tried guessing the IP's by typing in almost every IP in the available range
- no luck. Senao provides no information about doing a hard reset on the
units nor do they give any info on using the console port.

I remember the old Linksys WAP11's had a "find AP" utility. Anyone know of
anything like that for more modern hardware? I was told that ICS for XP
can not work with static IP's, but it looks like it supports ARP, so I
suppose I could set the AP and bridge(s) to static IP's as long as I stay
in the 192.168.0.xxx range. I just have to be able to get back in to set
them up...

Any thoughts or suggestions? Please respond off-sig, even though this is
for an APRS-like application, I'm sure it will bring complaints.

Regards,

Mark

Subject: RE: [aprssig] vehicle laptop mount for APRS rig

I currently use a 7" touchscreen LCD screen hooked up to a computer I have
installed under the passenger's seat, but could just as easily put a docking
station under the seat hooked to the screen and then just slide in your
laptop when you get in the car.

http://www.jenandnick.org/DSCN1599.JPG

A little bit ago someone brought up the mp3car.com site, I had gotten this
screen from someone on there for a good price and it works really well.
The computer is based on one of those low-power VIA compact motherboards
and runs windows xp just fine. Besides running some front end software to
control music and navigation software I also run APRS.... not very
touch-screen but with a wireless keyboard and mouse it's not bad. These
motherboards would seem to be a good option for a lower-power/compact
computer for general amateur radio use.

Robert,
Will you respond off list if possible? I have a question or two about your
installation.

I stumbled across this one today. I've considered just using a Mac Mini
under the back seat with a display along these lines.

Shoot, someone could probably come up with a mobile-friendly D700 control
program so I could control the D700, get the control head off the dash, and
work around some of the D700 shortcomings by using an APRS app on the
computer.

I've also thought about the mobile computers you mentioned, but I'm not so
sure how all the nifty peripherals interface with Linux, and I don't do
windows.
