Doesn't the new USB TNC function as a digipeater? That seems to be a
smaller form factor and will run as a stand alone.
Thank You,

Ooops... and I carefully typed that in with the space! Just looked in
FILTER.TXT and sure enough, no space there either. Sorry about that Clay!

You're hooked to Firenet, not the APRS-IS. That's why you're seeing them.
They're very useful, which is why they're on Firenet.
You can:
*) Figure out how to block certain types of stations in your client
(bud-list/friend's list sort of thing).
*) Switch to a client that has display filters in the menus.
*) Add a filter program between the client and Firenet.
*) Switch to a Firenet filtered port (Port 14580).
*) Switch to APRS-IS instead of Firenet. Filtered or non-filtered port at
your discretion.

Only 1 month before the end of PCSAT2. Do your experiments before 1 Sept
when it is scheduled to return to earth in the next shuttle mission.

We are excited about the potential here for tying ECHO downlink into the
global APRS internet system. One key schedule issue is that all of the
existing 9600 baud automated SATgates for PCSAT2 are tied into a dedicated
satellite only server, and since we are only one month from the de-orbit of
PCSAT2, we are hesitant to re-configure a critical and working system until
then.
But if the next Shuttle launch goes on schedule, PCSAT2 will be removed
from service about 1 Septermber and then some of those dedicated 9600 baud
SATgates can shift over to AO-51 (ECHO)...
THen, anyone, anywhere can use their mobile APRS station when in wilderness
areas, to get into the APRS system via ECHO

I'm trying to figure out how '*' is actually encoded in an AX.25 path. Is
it the cmd bit (above the SSID)?

It is the H (has-been-repeated) bit, the last bit in the SSID "byte" of
repater address fields (not sender or receiver fields). If it is set to
one, a star is printed, if zero, nothing is printed. See

The asterisk is just the human-readable representation of the
has-been-digipeated bit, or the this-digi-has-been-used-up field.
Whatever it's called.
Each bit gets set in sequence as each digi gets used up, but in
command-mode some TNC's only show you the last asterisk, some show you an
asterisk for each used-up digipeater field.
