Bob, I still have my little Windows-based app I wrote to convert callsigns
to DTMF for APRStt. It will do both the full version and hashed version.
I wrote it at the same time I was playing with APRStt

AND on the 50th anniversary of the US Interstate system one could also
consider low-power APRS-INFO-peaters at interstate gateways into major
cities. Most "travelers" do most traveling on the interstates.
Excellent locations (beaconing once evy 2 mins) would be inside tunnels, at
Toll booths, or anywhere that traffic is forced to slow down. These would
not be fill-in diigs, but would be purposefully made low power only to get
to the passing HAM motorist, and not to QRM the local APRS infrastructure.
Put them far enough out of town and deep in a valley out of earshot of the
local digi. Or if your area is wide enough with few-enough local users,
you can just put this info in your local DIGI BText.
Most digi's in southern Maryland include the frequency of the local voice
repeater for travelers and it is nice to be driving around and see the freq
and PL of a local repeater on the front panel of the radio.

Why don't APRS users that travel by air just put a working digi in a
suitcase and take it along for the ride? There would be enough room in a
medium sized suitcase for a ground plane and a quarter wave antenna, a
small battery and a TNC. Keep the power down at a watt or two. Add the guts
from one or two of those "shake it to recharge" LED flashlights and the
battery could be kept topped up indefinitely by the baggage handlers
chucking it around or playing football with it or whatever it is they do
the approx. 25% of lost luggage that doesn't quite make it to the next stop
the same time that you do.
If they don't actually succeed in losing it, you will have the benefit of a
working digi when you arrive. If they do lose it, some random airport
somewhere in the world would have a working digi. The only snag I can see
is how the digi would be able to announce it's real location. I suppose you
could put the designator for the destination airport in the status text and
use position ambiguity. OK, one more snag. You might need a circuit to get
it to flip-flop back and forth between 144.390 and 144.800 just in case it
ends up on another continent! <G>
Oh yes... insure it for twice it's actual value. Occasionally, the SWAT
teams would come in and blast it to smithereens. You could replace it on
the next trip with two more with the insurance money... if they still let
you fly, that is!

Yes, there is so much we could be doing with APRS to get more people APRS
capable. I checked out your WEB page and the HAM-HUD is just great!
It is an alternative to the Kenwoods for displaying to travelers what is
going on around them. In fact, if the HAMHUD added a standard PS2 keyboard
interface, then it could even exceed the Kenwoodd as far as in-the-field
APRS support of events.
Id like to see us move beyond little trackers and add the
receipt-and-display capabilities of the HAM-HUD and the keyboard entry.
ALl the pieces exist... so much to do.... so little time.... These would
make great club projects, etc... de WB4APR, Bob
