Status for MkLinux, week of August 20, 1996
DISCLAIMER - While we do try to give some estimate on when things will be released / fixed / working etc, these are
still estimates and are subject to change. Unexpected bugs are found, people take vacations, and sometimes priorities
have to be readjusted. This can cause delays.
As always, please bear with us while we try to get things going. Thank you for the support of this project.
New News
„PCI Selected
If you haven't visited the MkLinux web site lately, and wonder what class of machine has been selected to port to
next, you don't need to wonder any more. The next class of machine to port to is...
PCI: 7200/7500/7600/8500/9500
With any luck, the release date for PCI will be Christmas time (a perfect stocking stuffer!)
The other machine series (Performa's and PowerBook 5300s) will be tackled after the PCI port has been completed.
Sorry, there are still no plans to support the older 68K machines.
„960816 Update Released
As was announced last this week, a new update is available. See the details on the
960816 update page.
„DR2 Release Plans
Developer Release 2 is due out sometime within the next few weeks. CDROMs will be available through Prime
Time Freeware shortly after DR2 becomes available through the FTP site.
DR2 is not the final release of MkLinux for the 6100, 7100 and 8100 class of machines, nor is support included yet
for PCI machines. DR2 is a snapshot of what constitutes MkLinux right now, the current position in the path of
MkLinux development. We decided that there have been a sufficiently large number of bug fixes, additions,
enhancements, and changes since DR1 was released to warrant cutting a new, "baseline" version of MkLinux. The
basic commands have been upgraded, a few new commands have been included, and the latest available kernel
and server are used. And, of course, all known bug fixes have been applied.
Later this year, we will announce our first Reference Release. (The Reference Release is as "final" as things get; in
the Freeware community, nothing is ever really "final" :-). Following the Reference Release, the current class of
supported Macintosh platforms will be given a lower priority while new porting efforts are undertaken. However,
there are countless areas in MkLinux common to all platforms. Among these are: the Linux Server, non-platform
specific Mach code (accounting for about 85% of Mach), and most of the MkLinux command base.
„MkLinux booth at MacWorld Expo, Boston
MkLinux was well received in Boston during the week of August 7t updates
„Floppy Support
Floppy Support has been pushed out because of variuafs, fixing serial bugs and Support
Audio Support has been 2.0 upgrade
The work to upgrade from Linux 1.2.13 to Linux 2.0 is continuing. Most of the activity right now is merging the
Server changes into the Linux 2.0 base.
ETA: still early to mid Fall 96.
