Macintosh Display Cards 4¥8 & 8¥24 and third-party monitors
What do I need to determine if my third-party monitor is compatible with an
Apple video display card?
___
The Macintosh¨ Display Cards 4¥8 & 8¥24 support any monitor that meets one of
the following specifications:

The sensing of monitor type is through pins 4, 7, and 10. The sensing pins should be grounded or left unconnected. You can ground a pin by connecting it to Pin 11.

Mac LC video connector pinouts:
Pin Number Signal Name Signal Description
1 RED.GND Red ground
2 RED.VID Red video signal
3,15 /CSYNC or /HSYNC Composite synchronization signal if
Apple monitor. Horizontal
synchronization signal if VGA
monitor.
4 SENSE0 Monitor sense signal 0
5 GRN.VID Green video signal
6 GRN.GND Green ground
7 SENSE1 Monitor sense signal 1 (grounded
internally)
8 n.c. Not connected
9 BLU.VID Blue video signal
10 SENSE2 Monitor sense signal 2
11 C&VSYNC.GND Ground for CSYNC and VSYNC
12 /VSYNC Vertical synchronization signal
13 BLU.GND Blue ground
14 HSYNC.GND HSYNC ground

A "/" at the beginning of a signal name indicates that the signal is active low.
The Macintosh LC does not supply vertical synchronization with the Green video signal (pin~5). The vertical synchronization signal is supplied on pin 12.
The Macintosh LC requires that pin 4 (SENSE0) be connected to Ground to signal the connection of a 640 x 480 monitor. The Macintosh LC requires that pin 4 and 10 (SENSE0 and SENSE2) be connected to Ground to signal the connection of a 512 x 384 monitor (i

Here is how to get the most out of Your Multisync Monitor connected
to Your Apple:
With Apple's New Multiple-Scan-Monitor-Software which works on all Quadras
You can switch the resolution of Your screen without shutting down Your Mac
or pulling switches or changing Adapters!
So first get a copy of this Software.
Second You have to tell Your Mac that the Monitor supports Multiple Frequencies:
get 2 Sub-D 15-Pin connectors, one male, one female.
get 1 Diode.
connect all Pins but 4,7,10 straight between the two connectors.
on the male side of the connector short pins 4 and 11 with a wire.
connect the diode between pin 7 and 10 of the male connector in
a way that the black ring on the diode points to pin 7.
Now put this adapter between your mac and Your Video-Cable
You now got an 20'' multiple Scan Monitor!
You may switch between all Apple-Resolutions ranging
from 640*480, 832*624, 1024*768 to 1178*870 Dots
But Be careful not to damage Your Monitor with the high resolutions!
If You like this Tip, send me a Postcard!

RELATED NOTES:
- if your Monitor runs without the apple-software and simply goes dark
if the apple-m-scan-software is installed your cable adapter needs an
update because the apple software switches off the sync-signal from
the green-video. simply buy a new apple to VGA-adapter which supports
an extra sync line! (all new machines made by apple up from LC-III have no
sync on green because of energy-star-compatible reasons (????)
If You use an Monitor with BNC-Connectors You may connect pin 3 with
the Composite Sync on your monitor (ground to Pin 11) or 14 to H-Sync
and 12 to V-sync (gournd on 11) instead of buying a new cable!
Machines with sync on green are Quadra 700, Quadra 900/950 and some
other.
- The adapter should also work with the LC475/Performa 475 or newer models
because this is the same Video as in the Q610
maybe also in some LCIII and on some 8*24 and 8*24GC Cards
