When the Apple ][ was launched during the early 1980s Apple Inc made sure
that no 'official' clones came to the market ; although illegal clones
were available in Singapore etc made from Taiwan 'processed' components .
These components were then 'assembled' in back-street shops (often by
teenagers ,after school hours). I bought one of those ; used the machine
for about 5 years ;still OK .......waiting to be absorbed by a museum ;))
IBM did NOT fight the cloning of their PC resulting in ever decreasing
prices ................hence the PC became the facto standard , and was
perhaps the main reason for Microsoft's success.
When the Mac came to market Apple Inc again prevented cloning .
Inspite of (still) being a superior micro computer the Macs never
conquered the mass market. However they are still the choice of desktop
publishing companies.
