RESENT BECAUSE I'VE JUST DISCOVERED HANDSHAKE HAS BEEN NONE FOR
AGES AND THE LAST BULL PROBABLY GOT TRUNKATED!

The background.

About 15 years ago, a major European manufacturer of PMR
equipt decided to use a IIe as the programming tool for
one of the option modules on their equipt.

I now wish to set up a couple of these modules to 'play'
with the facilities available, in particular the 5 tone
signalling system.

Action
I have obtained a IIe, fitted with D1 and D2. CPU is
R6502-40, main board part no B 607 0264.
The only serial card I have been able to source is one
(in fact I've now got two!) made by California Computer
Systems, model 7710, built early 1983.
I also have of course a copy of the now obsolete genuine
software PMR utilities.

The problem.
The serial card resides in slot#2.
For the purposes of investigation I have a PC running
Procomm monitoring the serial port.
LOAD any apple basic program.
Issue PR#2
Issue LIST
As you may expect, the prog is listed to the PC.
No problems so far.
If I now issue IN#2 you would expect the PC terminal
emulation to have control over the IIe.
It doesn't.
Just in case I have missed somthing in the set-up,
I tried the PMR utilities. At the point where the
routine expects two characters as input( from what
would have originally been a Data I/O EPROM programmer
the whole thing hangs until ^reset.
The line in question is
430 GET AA$: GET PT$

Problems identified so far.
The I/O type 7710 was originally issued as -01,
(one of these cards is, the other had custom routines)
-01 does not work in a IIe ---my observation.
01 was soon upgraded to -02.
The manual I have for the serial card states
that the -02 driver makes a call to a location which
was changed in the new IIe system monitor.
It does not indicate revision nos of the 'old' or
the 'new'.
A single byte patch is supposed to cure the problem.
The manual contains object code for the -02 driver, and
concise instructions as to how to apply the patch.
As this is only 256 bytes, I have typed it in and
blown roms for the patched -03 driver.
It still dont allow input to the port!
PR#2 works as expected (but with loacl copy as well
on the IIe).
IN#2 hangs the whole caboodle.
BAD 7710 CARD I hear you cry!
So I tried the other one.
Same symptoms.
So I removed the ACIA and put a wire link from the ic
socket 2 to 6 (Tx-Rx), to prove the cables and flying leads.
The PC can send characters round the loop no problems.

Conclusion.
The IIe may have a system monitor other than that expected
by the 7710 firmware versions 01 and 03.

I might have two duff ACIAs'.

I favour option 1.

Can anyone help?-is this a known problem? Whats the fix?

For those who need to confirm some more details of
my system

The colour / mono switch is about half way back on
the right side of the main board, looking from the
keyboard. The board says clearly that it is a PAL
board (I'm only using 40 col mono anyway.)

The CD rom is marked 342 0135 B
The EF rom is marked 341 0134 B
The video rom is marked 341 0160 A

Is there a better /later system monitor?
Can I blow such ROMs myself or are they out and out
specials re pinouts and voltages?
From the above ROM info, does anyone know the entry
points for the following?:-

GETKEY
INKEY

Finally
If there is anyone out there with a 7710 with a firmware
> -03 that works fine in a IIe, I'd be grateful if you could
send me a HEX dump or a rom image for me to try. Please of
course, include the version# !!

Many thanks for reading this far.
Even more thanks if you can SP any relevant information.
