They may use GDO style oscillators but you do have a frequency meter built
in. So you can see the drift on the frequency. The basic accuracy of the
frequency meter will be accurate enough. I cant vouch for the accuracy of
the measuring circuits, but again they're going to be good enough for the
purpose intended.
MFJ's made from junk reputation is well deserved for some of their tuners
where the power ratings are a little optimistic! But from having played
with an MFJ259 it seemed to do what it said in the manual. As a tool for
setting up a dipole it did make the job trivial... string up wire, measure
where it was resonant, do the simple calculation in the book, trim 5 inches
of the ends of dipole, check, put tools away and go on air. Time taken to
setup antenna... less than 5 mins and I had to drink some tea at the same
time!
Better than having to snip, walk back from garden to shack, measure SWR
(pronounced swaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrr of
course :-)), walk to antenna and snip, walk back to shack and measure
swaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr again, etc.
You'll have to manually tune and record you readings for plotting on a
Smith chart which no doubt gets boring after a while and especially so if
you have access to proper toys that automate the process. But there are a
lot of handy useful functions built in if you consider what you are really
paying. Of course buying in the US for $239 is the sensible thing as that
works out at about 135ukp. Much better than the price charged by some
bandits down South !
So for 135ukp, it's accurate and well made enough. I havent seen the
Palstar unit so I dont know how that compares and to be perfectly clear,
I've never used a 259 above 30MHz.
