I'll have to say that I still complelty dissagree.

I've tried using them with a portable setup which I've taken to a good
outdoor location etc - I never got the chance to use it as by the time 
these bent pipe birds came in range un  til the END  of the pass all
I ever heard was some DL station on it every time!

If a satellite dunderhead like me could be 100% successful with an
old FT101 and long wire and a tatty 10w 2m multimode with some brake pipe
in the loft for an antenna can use with easrt every time then how
can that be worse than a single FM bent pipe system that I could never
make a single QSO on ?

I think you're in a minority on this one as responses seen so far
indicate the same preference as I've already made.
