I am in full a greement with David,G4EBT's first two paragraphs.

Long before I was 17 i treated ham radio as similar to bowls; somethuing
to do when I was very old. I didn't know Andrew was that young. He is very
sensible.

At 17 I had other hobbies and school work ('A' Levels).

My only interest in electronics was in mending TV sets. TV had just
restarted and there were no TV engineers NB, there were no university
courses in TV engineering either so I couldn't have got a degree in it.

As well as being interesting, people paid me for it, another motivator.

I got into ham radio by accident when I was 48. I had had a disbling
accident. I went to a computer show to see PCs and accidentally got out my
credit card when I saw a cute little 70cm hand held. I didn't even know
the
FM calling frequency so I had to take an exam.

|Since then, not only has ham radio decreased in popularity but CB has
virtually disappeared except for a few wagon drivers who keep them to ask
directions and "1-9 for a 10-13 :-)"

As David says. Packet is a kind of news group where you don't get accused
of being "off topic". The users tend to be more intelligent, probably
because it takes an exam. It doesn't stop certain sections from being
extremely insulting; they just use longer words.

If you are lucky enough to do it via RF as I did until a couple of years
ago, it's FREE.

I do have a couple of main interests NOT electronics in any form. That was
work! I also have a mild interest in a great number of topics. I won't
even try to start a list.

As for why people give up AR & CB, "I just got bored" is the commonest
reason. This also applies to computers. People who used them and even
learnt programming languages now just use broadband to send emails and
check out facts if they need them with a search engine. They don't join
news groups.

A growing interest as far as I can tell, is downloading music, preferably
free. A praisworthy ambition in my book.

I saw a local landlord using his laptop in the bar. Thr programme looked a
bit odd, not MS colours. It only took a quick glance to realise he was
using a peer to peer music programme. I heard a few words he was saying to
an onlooker, to the effect that he was downloading the latest tracks and
putting them on CD to go in his jukebox. He ignored the creaky "old
geezer"
and had a look of shock when I just mentioned it casually the following
week,Hi!

I don't know if there are juke box inspectors who check out pubs. I hope
there aren't. I have no interest in music, so it doesn't bother me.

The only music site I have been to was "Songs of WW II". Somehow I ended
up with 'Die Fahne Hoch' in English,Spanish,Italian,French,Russian and, of
course German. The lyrics that is. There is also a musical rendition by
the marching Band of the SS.I'll put it out as 7Plus if anyone wants it
but any decent search engine should find it.
