It should not get as desperate as you needing to spend any money
although CRs are quite cheap these days.
Not sure what TNC you have, but try looking at the CR command,
for normal operation its usual to have SENDPAC set to $OD so that
the TNC will transmit a packet when you hit the Enter/Carriage return
key in hyper terminal. You then need to set CR to ON in the TNC
so that a Carriage Return ($OD) character is added to the end of each
packet as its sent.
I'm afraid its not really an option to suggest the rest of us
put this right for you, as unless you get it sorted you'll
continue to have all sorts of problems.
P.S. you need to hit the Enter key before you reach 79 characters :-)
I don't think changing PACLEN will help without having CR set correctly
