Hi Angela and readers,
You're missing NOTHING my dear, SPOT ON! While I make exception for the
UK where the antiquated 3rd party laws and NoV requirements are forcing a
move to the Internet I have a phrase for those who don't operate under
such restrictions, LAND LINE LIDS! (FYI, "lid" means a poor operator in
ham parlance, not some slang term meaning something different.)
We have it bad enough having to deal with competition from the Internet,
cell phones and the like plus a general lack of interest in radio
communications so the last thing we need is traitors among the ranks! Can
this Internet linking, forwarding crap and get back to RADIO where we
belong! It's not rocket science but some lazy bums think it is, all
that's needed is a bit of research into how it's done (part and parcel of
our Intent And Purpose which is Article 1 BTW) and a reasonable
investment in equipment including an ANTENNA. With all the money put into
some whiz-bang computer and ISP one wonders why the excuse when it can be
put into a suitable rig and a bare bones computer to run the show.
OK, enough of another one of my LLL tirades, BPL was another issue
mentioned. You see much protest coming from the US simply because we're
not fooled by the propaganda having witnessed first hand the interference
caused by testing. I'm sure you have read it all on the ARRL web site and
elsewhere so no point in mentioning all the details. At first some in the
UK and elsewhere fell for the nonsense that it doesn't cause QRM but
recent testing has proven otherwise and the sleepers awakened. I hear
rumblings from down under too, they'll awaken eventually as well. This
looks like it's going to be a worldwide problem or close to it and a
pointless endevor at that. Where there are telephones there goes the
Internet so who needs it on power lines where it radiates? Maybe some
bushman doesn't have a telephone but likely he has a Diesel generator if
not a power line to his hut so even with him the point is moot.
One thing on our side besides the ARRL and other such organizations
(provided they're not sleeping too) is broadcasters, commercial users and
even the military and government itself. If hams get QRM they do to
without special filtering at a distance from the installation, another
needless expense. While the government gets YOU to pay for it, not so
with broadcasters and commercial users, they have to absorb it at a
reduction in profit and THEY have already risen in protest.
Now here's the funny bit, the government ended up like that snake eating
itself. They push BPL and cause interference to themselves, ironic isn't
it?
Time will tell who will win out and I hope it's us even by proxy, LONG
LIVE AMATEUR RADIO!
