iN 1947 I was transferred to a camp in a wood at Aldershot to enter a course
for motor mechanics. As this was a school, holidays were as a normal school.
in July the camp closed for a few weeks but the last course members were kept
to secure the premises, I was one of those.
Whilst in the gaurd room one night footsteps were heard coming from one of the
cells, We traced the footsteps to a cell which We were told had been closed
for a few years, the cell was the only one which had a wired compound outside
the gaurdhouse and it did not have a gate to the outside. We could not find a
key to the cell though the footsteps were heard all night.
When I was posted to Germany i mentioned about this in a magazine and received
an answer from someone who had experienced this also. It seems some Tommy had
commited suiside during the war and the key had been thrown away. I am unable
to remember the name of the camp only remember it was in a wood at the end of
the runwaay of Farmborough air field. Brian Collinge G7NYD /VK2TPG
